Ugly Stick - Still Glistening [CD]
Ugly Stick return after 14 years to bring us a new album, the aptly titled 'Still Glistening'. Known back in the late 80s/early 90s for their pioneering blend of genres, culminating in the label Cowpunk, Ugly Stick like to mix up their sound with rock, country, student rock, indie, pop and hillbilly.
'Still Glistening' starts with a great track ‘Little Lynn’, this little number will have you singing along in no time, with it’s catchy lyrics, bouncing rhythm and beautifully melodic harmony vocals. This track sets the tone for 'Still Glistening' and re-ignites that sound which made them so notorious back in the day. Ugly Sticks' sound is something that is unique yet so commercial and accessible. The sound doesn’t seem that original now but considering they were playing this stuff 20 years ago shows how genres have intertwined in modern music.
A lot of bands take the risk of reforming after many years and try to get that sound and passion that they had many years prior. Ugly Stick seem not to have lost any of their magic and I’m sure that their fans will be elated at the revival. Ugly Stick will pick up new fans for sure, just go and listen to ‘Little Lynn’ and you’ll be hooked on that punky, jangly southern sound.
