Re: Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion [Album]
I won't lie and say I have always loved them. When I first heard Animal Collective, I just didn't understand it at all (although that was when they were less melodic); but then 'Strawberry Jam' came out and it all fell into place for me. Now having bought their entire back catalogue, I appreciate everything they have done.
It happened the same way with my favourite band of all time (Pixies). I didn't 'get' much of what they did at first (I loved the obvious ones like 'Debaser' and 'Gigantic'), but I revisited them a few years later and it all made complete sense. I think there may be something in that; that perhaps you will love a band even more if you have had to really work to love them. Perhaps if it's too effortless it can be fleeting? I dunno.
I just so admire people who try to do something different and be original, because it's really not fucking easy (nigh on impossible). 99% of my music collection is by bands/artist who draw upon and display quite obvious influences, and I really love much of it, but it's just so refreshing to have a band like this in your life (for me anyway).
Hope you manage to get your head around it; but if not, it may happen one day when you don't expect it.
