CD Review - Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal [Single] Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal [Single]

Oh score! The new Wyld Stallyns jam! Not really but Bill & Ted would love Steel Panther. Big hair shooting out in all directions and every inch of flesh covered in ink and animal print lycra, Steel Panther are '80's metal, albeit with a tongue firmly planted in its rouged cheek.

Playing it completely straight faced 'Death to all but Metal' is a serious musical accomplishment, like it or not. The production is crystal and the all round technical ability is superior. Steel Panther really let you know it with the kind of overwrought guitar solo this music calls bedrock.

Eminem would be forced to tip his cap at the number of lyrical lambasts dropped on everyone from Madonna to Blink 182 and Papa Roach (hardly worth the slam, surely?). Basically the message here is death, right, to all with the only exception being metal. Swearing is an important part of wishing death to all but metal too so careful where you pump this one. There is a radio edit on the CD but it is all but unlistenable as the swearing has been replaced with a variety of sound effects. Pointless, in other words.

Never been a fan of comedy in music myself - you can keep your Pick of Destiny - but having been around for Def Leppard's Hysteria I can appreciate what is going on here and putting aside the 'humour', it's actually a solid hair-metal rock tune. I'd much rather check them out live at one of their regular Sunset Strip shows though. Stage theatrics, special guests (Avril Lavigne and Justin Hawkins to name a couple) and banter with the audience would make all the difference with a band like this.
