Also.. I love shooting gigs with no flash, I have a sweet 50mm(film)prime lens, f1.8. Perfect for gigs with no flash!

People should never be too proud to admit to luck, it plays a fair sized part in all the arts, sport too. People just don't like to admit it.

Oh yeah agreed man, I said that originally but the amount of luck
diminishes the more you get better at Photography, it never fully dissipates
though I agree.

depends what you shoot, if your shooting a gig or something action based digital is just more practical, you can see your results instantly and change your set up as required, and u can take 300 pictures at no cost or effort.

but......

there is something awesome about film, more care/skill especially for street and documentally style work.

i started with film, now i shoot both

Agree with you there Paul. TBH I get a bit hacked off with all this love affair with film above all else. The last time I had film processed, it cost me best part of £100 for one holiday's worth. I've still got the OM1, great in controllable conditions but for a gig I'd rather use anything digital, even a mobile phone.

I started shooting gigs with film, and since it's almost ALL first three songs no flash, the wait for the prints was pure agony. The expense in sensitive films, developing and printing it's something I'm still paying for. And out of 3, 4 films worth you were lucky if you could come up with 10 good ones, since you had to pretty much guess the settings. Yes, I know you can measure light and all that geeky stuff, but although I've completed my photography course I don't like to think too much about the technical side of it when doing gigs, spoils the moment really.

With digital, I can go trigger happy, see straight away what I'm doing right or wrong, play with different settings for different results, make sure I manage to get that one glimpse of light on the bass player who's been in the dark all gig long... I just shoot and look, shoot and look, and after the first song I pretty much just keep shooting, feeling the music just like the front rows are and trying to capture the moment, the emotion. It's an amazing feeling, indescribable.

And for what concerns the three songs no flash... I think no flash photos catch the show lights, they're more real and tridimensional, while flash tends to make everything a bit flat and dull. Having said that, it would be nice if the light guys at gigs would enlighten the front, too often light is behind the subject and you get some amazing silhouettes but very little face features. Three songs are more than enough, I tend to leave the pit even in the few cases (generally support bands) when they let us shoot. I just end up with too many pictures looking all the same, sometimes the band is not happy with it and as a short person I remember how much I used to hate photographers when I had queued since morning to make it to front row...

DIGITAL FOREVER!!!!!!!!
