Mike Borgia signs TV/film contract

Artist MIKE BORGIA signs to Monolith Records for a digital distro deal where the label will push digital download sales of his new record 'Issues To Egos' through iTunes music store as well as song placement in TV/film.
Monolith Records is a newly formed label out of California by entertainment lawyer Robert Windom.
Mike was discovered through his relentless web promotion. Robert approached him as commercially viable to the TV/Film industry. The contract is a non-exclusive agreement for 1 year with options.

Deals such as this are much more suitable for indie artists these days. It gives them a fair share of the profit, without having to pay back heavy expenses accrued from advertising, tour support and album recording costs.

Rap Star M.I.A. Barred From US

British rapper M.I.A. has been denied the chance to work with legendary hip-hop producer Timbaland after she was barred from entering the US.

The star, who was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for her debut album 'Arular' last year, has been denied a visa to work in the States.

M.I.A. made the announcement on her official website, but did not explain why the decision had been made.

Her message, under the headline "They try to shut my door!" reads: "Roger Roger do you here me over!!!! The US immigration won't let me in!!!!!"

She added: "Now I'm strictly making my album outside the borders!!!!" and asked fans to spread the word using the internet.

Her UK record company, XL Recordings, would not comment on why she had not been able to get into America, but numerous messages of support posted by fans suggest it is related to the political content of her songs.

Her records have featured controversial lyrics about revolution such as the line "like PLO I don't surrender" in her most recent single, 'Sunshowers'.

We Are The Fury in Van Accident

"Hey everyone. Friday afternoon we were involved in a serious accident while driving through Colorado. We crashed our van around the Vail Passage area of Route 70 near Breckenridge. We were driving through a heavy snowstorm on our way home from Los Angeles when we hit ice and lost control of our vehicle and slammed into the guardrail.

Surprisingly, the guardrail held and we didn't fall down the five hundred foot mountain drop, which is a miracle. As we were sliding toward the edge our trailer jackknifed and snapped off. This prevented the van from flipping and rolling over the side of the mountain, which is a damn good thing because if we had gone over the edge I definitely would not be here describing the accident to you. For the most part, we are all alright aside from being a bit shook up. We all have cuts and bruises from the impact and the air bags, but we feel extremely lucky.

However our van was not so lucky. Its looking like the axle snapped on impact, which will most likely leave the van totaled. We are currently looking into rental options to get home and will then be trying to do whatever we can to try and get a new van. John Dufilho of the Deathray Davies has announced plans for two Dallas area parties to celebrate the release of his first solo record. The self-titled set is due in stores October 18th on Austin-based, Glurp Records.

Check this band out! I'm not sure if you all remember SEAWEED but they were a great band that defunked by 2000 I believe. Spanaway was their debut that rocked the pants off the hipsters and if they stayed around long enough could have been immense.

OK Go's new album is scheduled for release on August 30th. I�m sure you guys may have heard of them � they�re a band from Chicago who garnered praise for their self-titled debut in 2002.

A couple years ago, OK Go performed at some live shows This American Life was doing onstage in several cities. I and the other writers on the program would do our thing, tell our little stories, and in between our bits, the lads would come out and sing their loud, catchy songs. It was like traveling with living catnip. We had huge crowds and people of every age-high school sophomores to senior citizens-just LOVED them, couldn't get enough, couldn't stop talking about OK Go. I wish I could describe what was so special about it; suffice it to say that the band simply overwhelmed the audience with this exuberant buzz of fun and happiness and youth and rock 'n roll. They were sexy in a way that had a kind of well-scrubbed pop innocence to it, but also was able to move a friend into murmuring backstage, "I want to fuck all four of them." This seemed to be a common response.

Another thing the audience liked about OK Go: they seemed smart, in a self-deprecating sort of way. Their songs were cleverly put together-part indie rock, part stadium rock, part straight up pop with the occasional whiff of the Pixies or The Cars or Elliott Smith. They're like a boy band that got seduced by Queen and wound up in college instead of Orlando. Listening to their music, I wasn't surprised to learn that their lead singer, Damian Kulash, was a semiotics major at Brown. Semiotics, after all, is just a bunch of theorists stripping down pop culture to its wiring and piping and component parts, to figure out the mechanics of how it gives pleasure. OK GO is all about pleasure.

The band's message seems to be: rock 'n roll can be fun without being dumb. It can be a pleasure without being a guilty pleasure. It can be accessible without pandering. It can be sexy without being trendy. This is a grand, old vision of what it means to be a rock star, and a very different vision from most of the music we get today. It's neither ironic, nor filled with a wistful sadness, nor superficially testosterone-aggressive. They seem like people who just love rock music and want to indulge in all the amusing, thrilling things it can do.

Some basic bio info about them: It's Damian Kulash on lead vocals and guitar, Tim Nordwind on bass, Dan Konopka on drums and Andy Duncan playing keyboards and guitar. Median height: 5' 11". Total weight of the band (without equipment): 624 pounds.

Damian and Tim met at summer camp when they were eleven and promptly formed a band called The Greased Ferrets that featured folding chairs played as drums. They claim not to remember any of the songs they wrote at the time but I don't believe them. They met Andy in high school and Dan in college, but somehow didn't form into OK Go until 1999, even though they all believed that someday they'd play in a band together. Figure.

When OK Go performed with This American Life, the band ended each of our shows with a dance routine they'd concocted. It was simultaneously a parody of a boy-band dance number and the best one ever choreographed, bringing down the house. People leapt to their feet. Half the moves in it, I swear, came from cheerleading squad. It was amazing to see these indie-rock boys pull it off and every time they performed it, I couldn't believe how lucky I was, how sweet life was, that I got a chance to witness it over and over. It was rocking, it was brainy, it was brainless. It was pure pleasure.

Taking a daring step away from the dancey fun rock of the debut, the forthcoming sophomore release, Harmonies for the Haunted (hitting the streets of September 13th on RCA), is a darker, more mature follow up that looses none of the insatiable appeal of their previous tunes.
