Things that people think are good values are obviously twisted, but there are other things considered evil that obviously aren’t. There is real evil out there, but Evil Urges is about how all of these things that you’ve been told are evil really aren’t, unless they’re actually hurting something or somebody.”

It’s ambitious territory for the group’s fifth full-length studio album, and it’s matched by the most far-ranging, surprising, and satisfying sounds of their career. From the freak-funk electro-slam of “Highly Suspicious” to the contemplative “Sec Walkin’,” which could almost be a Nashville standard, on Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket display the scope and fearlessness that demonstrates their growth into one of the world’s great rock & roll bands.

One key to attaining these new heights was a change of scenery. The band recorded their first three albums—the independent releases The Tennessee Fire (1999) and At Dawn (2001), and their 2003 ATO debut It Still Moves—in their home studio outside of Louisville, Kentucky. These records established the signature MMJ sound, mixing soaring harmonies with cascading, psychedelic guitars, and drenching the whole thing in head-ringing reverb. For their last studio album, 2005’s widely acclaimed Z, they headed to Allaire Studios at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. Working with producer John Leckie, they crafted a more eclectic blend of sounds, bringing James’s vocals further forward and adding reggae, soul, and pure pop into their gumbo.

This time, though, they opted for a different kind of setting, recording the bulk of Evil Urges in midtown Manhattan’s Avatar Studios. “We wanted to deliberately try to make ourselves uncomfortable and shake it up,” says James. “I feel like New York is just limitless possibility—you never knew what you’d see on the way to the studio, every morning was an adventure.”

James recalls coming to Avatar one morning and hearing a subway station full of people singing along to a street musician singing Bill Withers and Hall and Oates songs. Guitarist Carl Broemel says that one day he got onto the train in Brooklyn, and the car “filled up with a thousand Santa Clauses.”

The energy and intensity of the city found its way into MMJ’s playing. All five members of the band independently came up with the word “urgency” when asked to describe the feeling of the sessions, which were co-produced by James and Grammy-winner Joe Chiccarelli.

Not that this focus made the recording any less fun—“it was nice to be around people for a change,” says bassist Two-Tone Tommy, “we’ve always been so secluded.” (The big-city setting, however, didn’t determine all of the sounds on Evil Urges; Tommy notes that he came up with some of his bass parts in his yard while he was on his riding mower.)

What instantly jumps out of the Evil Urges grooves is the power of the band’s rhythm playing, especially the jacked-up crunch of the opening salvo—the title track, with its Philly-soul-flavored strings and high harmonies, into “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream (Part One)” followed by “Highly Suspicious.” It brings to the surface a love of hip-hop and R&B that MMJ has always claimed, but never revealed so explicitly.

“I feel like rhythm is kind of forgotten in a lot of rock music, but also that arrangement can be forgotten in a lot of hip-hop and current R&B music,” says James. “Everybody is traveling along this dangerously segregated path, and I was wanting to incorporate all different types of stuff.” The centrality of the beat, he says, is just as important on the quieter songs as the monster jams—“it’s all unified by this bottom-end thing.”

Other songs on the album illustrate a new maturity in James’ writing. “Librarian” is the most straight-ahead narrative composition in the MMJ catalogue. “I’m not normally a storyteller songwriter, but that’s just what came out,” says James. “The kind of person I’m attracted to is someone that is not projecting themselves that way, so I always felt the whole ‘sexy librarian’ concept is just hilarious, and also really true.” (“Someone should make a movie out of that one,” says Broemel.)

And fear not, rock & rollers: My Morning Jacket has in no way abandoned the guitar frenzy so beloved by their fans. The blitzkrieg garage assault of “Remnants” and “Aluminum Park” blast as hard as anything they’ve ever done, and “I’m Amazed” features James and Broemel’s thrilling, soaring tag-team playing. James’ voice, meanwhile, has grown stronger and more fluid than ever, able to convey intimacy or howl at the rafters.

This broad palette of sounds and styles first became clear when the fivesome convened in Colorado last year and listened to the demos of almost thirty new songs that James had worked up. “When I heard ‘Highly Suspicious,’” says keyboardist Bo Koster, “I knew then, OK, anything goes, there’s no stopping this.”

Drummer Patrick Hallahan adds that the band wasn’t intimidated by the demands of this new batch of music. “It really challenged all of us to play differently,” he says. “There was lots of exploration, lots of beautiful mistakes.”

Evil Urges marks a new high point for a band that is proudly, impressively evolving. Z was a breakthrough for My Morning Jacket, really their first attempt to use the studio to do more than just capture their incomparable live sound (as documented on the mesmerizing live 2006 CD and DVD releases, both titled Okonokos). This album, though, extends that sense of experimentation and aspiration—and Jim James gives credit to his bandmates for the accomplishment.

“I’m pretty controlling, because I know what I want to do and how I want things to sound,” he says. “But they’re so good at working with me, and chilling me out and making my dreams come true—and then always making everything sound even better.“

For more on the band, go here.

Music is a funny game, especially in South Wales. There is so much to choose from that sometimes bands will appeal just for their unconventional nature and you’ll find yourself listening and wanting them to be good just because they represent something different, something new.

Alkalay are on of those very bands, Merthyr Tydfil’s next big thing seem to comply with anything unique you’d look for in a band. Six members is a feat in itself, two being female is something else, and the fact one of those is a guitarist lends them to the title of “not your typical band.” Stylistically Alkalay are all about metal-influenced pop-punk, the diversity with which the sextet ply their trade should immediately turn eyes and ears their way.

Remaining founding members Richard Meyrick (guitar) & Becka Elias (guitar) set out to create something new and refreshing, given that Richard’s previous band Defined weren’t going anywhere, the pair set out to form My Favourite Accident; as they were previously known. Being joined by Becky Morgan (vocals), Thomas Cartwright (vocals) & Luke Ryan (drums), the band set out for their first gig at Porth’s Pop Factory venue in May 2007.

The current line-up was completed in July of that year with the arrival of bassist Gareth Burrough. The band have since gone on to comprehensively play shows throughout South Wales, developing into a crowd pleasing act and picking up many new fans and friends along the way. The band have come a long way both on and off stage, recent recordings with Chris Maguire at Screamadelica Studios are pushing the band’s sound ever further. With the release of a debut EP due for the summer of 2008, it looks as though things are only going one way for this enthuastic sextet, and that way is up.

After launching out of the garage in 2004, Sorry About Your Couch has played over 100 shows, booked two DIY tours, and recorded two EP’s along with countless demos.

Justen, Kyle, and Dan have established a unique, intense sound that draws influence from punk, reggae, and the idea that music should be played and not processed. The band has previously played with acts such as The Lawrence Arms, Bad Religion, and The Effigies, and has gone on tours spanning numerous states as well as the Vans Warped Tour in 2006.

Sorry About Your couch is currently writing and preparing to go in the studio with Tyler Zaucha behind the board.

With its explosive, infectious roar, "Wake Up" alerts Story of the Year's fanatical, global following that the epic, uplifting The Black Swan is upon us. An artistic triumph in every sense, the beloved, million-selling band's third studio album is unequivocally its finest, building on the strength of past accomplishments while celebrating a newfound allegiance with Epitaph.

"Making this record felt like starting over," says Dan Marsala, frontman for the St. Louis-reared quintet. "We're like a brand new band. You can hear it in these songs, we're excited again. I think we've really stepped it up on this record."

If Story of the Year's career achievements - from 2003's smash debut Page Avenue to headlining massive festivals such as the Van's Warped Tour and Taste of Chaos, to world tours with the likes of My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park and The Used - have been abundant, they've also been the result of the esteemed modern rock outfit's tireless work ethic and willingness to push boundaries musically. Approaching the follow-up to 2005's In the Wake of Determination with a burst of creative freedom, Story of the Year - which also counts guitarists Ryan Phillips and Philip Sneed, bassist Adam Russell and drummer Josh Wills - elevates The Black Swan with these same key convictions.

Ferocious and thought-provoking, The Black Swan finds Story of the Year in the rare position of being one of the biggest bands in the world, while being left to its own devices to evolve and flourish creatively.

"I hope people really read into the lyrics and respect the fact that we don't sing about lollipops and gummi-bears," Ryan explains. "Musically, we've grown so much. We have some very unique, timeless, face melting guitar riffs and solos that have come to define our sound, without compromising the idea of a classic song."

Christopher “Chris” Paul Maguire was born on 4th November 1978 in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom. His flair for creativity started very early on. At age 6 his musical, artistic and technological skill began with Chris crafting his own music by carefully programming the BEEP command on a Spectrum 48K (the one with rubber keys!!). It wasn’t long before Chris was searching around for other ways to make and record music. Starting by teaching himself guitar through the use of his fathers Fender acoustic guitar and Beatles records he was soon purchasing his first microphone from pocket money saved and laying down simple 1 track live recordings.

Over the next 10 years Chris honed in one his guitar, vocal and recording skills and had progressed and mastered recording on a four track. He had also learnt the basics of playing bass, drums and keyboards out of technical and musical necessity. Chris’ technology skills had also bettered dramatically over these 10 years with Chris now being able to program and build computers and craft his own websites by hand. Chris also discovered the world of film making through the use of his parents rather expensive (at the time) camcorder. Chris directed and edited a bunch of home made films over the coming years.

Chris went to University to study Art & Design at age 17 where he concentrated a lot more on his other artistic skills including drawing, painting, animation, design and photography. At the same time as attending university Chris played in bands (both bass and guitar) and had progressed onto recording 8-32 track reel to reel executively producing all the tracks that his band recorded in varying studios across Wales.

At age 21 Christopher was designing, fixing and maximizing telecommunication networks across the world and was transferred to Washington DC to head up the Network Analysis team in the US. A very high paying job Christopher did this for 5 years saving all his money with one aim in mind- starting his own multimedia studio back in the UK. This dream became a reality for Chris in 2005 when he relocated back to Wales, UK and turned his back on his high paying job to focus fully on all aspects of his creativity.

Christopher is currently the senior Engineer, Producer, Mastering Engineer, Artist, Film Maker, Designer and Photographer at Screamadelica Studios in Cardiff Bay, Wales, UK (www.screamadelica.co.uk) and has been lucky enough to find a home that allows him to continue all aspects of his creative career.

As a Record Producer Chris has worked on tracks for Cerys Matthews, Fiction Plane, Ben’s Brother, Will Haven, The Wonder Years and hundreds more and equally as important bands and artists - some signed and some not. Chris has been key in helping to manifest a very bustling Welsh music scene and continues to do so on a daily basis.

If you are in need of the highest quality record production or other creative work then make sure you use the contact details above without hesitation. Chris is an extremely approachable character and loves talking to new people about their ideas and where/how he can help on a project.

A crazy and resourceful tale, lead by those 8 notorious raving mad haunting the stage and setting fire to the audience with their enormous energy and their scathing, cynical and out of boundaries sense of humour...

The strolling world of Ohreland takes place when Sebkha-Chott lands on stage. Lead by Wladimir Ohrelianov II's [bass] orders, the audience becomes the common people of Ohreland: falling on their knees in front of the Ohrelander pope Benoit Popol II [keyboards], the brother of the tyrant, slavering of envy (or jalousy) in front of the appealing and pernicious courtesan Yüla Slipovitch [drums], liquefied of desire (or complexs) in front of the cute and silky haired pirate Capt'ain Roses [guitar], impressed by the science and the increasing madness of the old crazy wise man Professor Siphon Troünezohle [samples/machines] and his brilliant finding: the Albino Rastafarï pretentiously named VaGoDor Deu Sahpun [saxophones], or else drinking a glass of rhum with the milician friend who cancels the parking tickets and that we would all have had as a friend, Tzom Trümb [Trombone], rhum served by the exotical and sanguine merovingian pimp Jules Lefranc-Gaulois Kaïser [percussions]. Honour is then made to the Mekanik Metal Disco for the length of a set (1 hour and a quarter or more) without any concession, punctuated with improvised theatral interventions and thus in perfect adequacy with the terrestrial actuality. The atmosphere regularly switches from broad jokes to nigthmares, following the rythm of the exacerbated faults of the tyrant and his flocks, to finally end up with a very unlikely outcome.

Sustained by a music oscillating between Frank Zappa and Magma, Mr Bungle and Fantômas, between 70's prog and 21st century's extrem metal, the story - the prank should I better say - of a dictatorship based on Mekanik Metal Disco's vinyls production and the aversion of the mustache. A crazy and resourceful tale, lead by those 8 notorious raving mad haunting the stage and setting fire to the audience with their enormous energy and their scathing, cynical and out of boundaries sense of humour...
  SYNOPSIS

Who are we? The band began at the beginning of 2007 firstly as a songwriting partnership between close friends Colin Baxter and Mark Strange who had previously worked together in another band. After putting together several songs and playing a host of acoustic gigs they felt the songs were strong enough to be performed at full band level...and so Mark’s brother Alan was recruited ..boards, Craig Millar on bass and Colin Boyle on drums. From here The Levings were born. The five members of The Levings bring together a number of styles and personal influences which explains the diverse sound of the band. Collectively influenced by xtc, wings, talking heads, beatles, dylan, television, squeeze, cream, weller, byrds, small faces, doors, beach boys among others, there are no hard and fast rules to the style of songs written by the band. The Levings feel that today’s music listener doesn’t like to be pigeon holed in the same way bands dislike it, so look to produce good music people want to hear rather than stick to a formula. Collectively, The Levings is in it’s infancy, although individually bring together years of musical experience which will hopefully help shape the future.

EXOTIC UNDERGROUND FROM SOUTH RUSSIA (NORTH CAUCASUS)

ZAZERKALIE 1988-2008
At the beginning of nineties they blew up the brains of their contemporaries and rapidly became a legend of Russian cultural underground. The ZAZERKALIE (THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS), a group from Rostov-on-Don, reunited after 12 years and recorded a strictly powerful album in the genre that could be hardly determined unambiguously.
The songs of Oleg Gaponov are written in the hard mix of street folk, pathos of postnietzscheanism and images from romantic poetry of the XIX century and excite contradictory feelings.
These songs are the heart-to-heart narrated stories from life of the lost generation, full of struggle and despair. These are the eschatological oracles as if retelling by eternal prisoners of madhouses to each other and to their supervisors. These are the tired damns for the modern world-the-performance with its property that is compulsory for everyone.

And what about the music? During the listening appears an image of some grown old rebels who had been growing up with Cossack songs and early psychedelia, who passed through all fascinations of punitive
medicine, and at last settled as restaurant musicians trying to propagate their ideas in a popular form to the haunters.

Main genres: Post-Punk, Indie Rock, Goth Rock, Dark Rock, Neo-Folk, Neo-psychedelic, Indie Cabaret, Dark Chanson.
We have three CD in Russia:

POWER of the FATE 2005 3tone (label of Zazerkalie)
