Altsounds: First things first, where does the name Hoobastank come from?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: Well, the word "HOOBA" is Latin for "one with much passion for". STANK is Greek for "a woman's rectum".

Altsounds: Are you pleased with how the new single 'My Turn' is doing so far?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: I haven't been following how the song is doing. our manager fills us in but I kind of just tune it out. I don't want to think about that right now. Last I heard it was moving up the charts.

Altsounds: You've only released 'My Turn' on Itunes and not CD, why is this?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: The full album 'Fornever' [CD] comes out January 27th 2009!

Do people buy CD's any more?

Altsounds: What were your influences for the new album?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: I listened to a ton of stuff before and during the writing and recording of for(n)ever. The Police, Portishead, The Doors, U2, Led Zepplin and a bunch more.

I was actually really inspired by the piano. I'm really bad but I love messing around. I'll end up playing something that I have no fucking clue how I got there but I really like it!

I'd record it at home and fix it all up to sound like I knew how to play. Sometimes, I will play the piano part on guitar and then it turns into a Hoobastank song.

Altsounds: You've got a few gigs coming up, for example the one in Agoura Hills, but have you got any current plans for any tours soon?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: We're heading to Hawaii for 3 shows coming up. From there we go to Bangkok to headline a festival then right back to the US for a bunch of Christmas radio shows. We'll be on the road until December 20th. Then, back out again next year! Everywhere!!!

Altsounds: What do you think of your UK fanbase, compared to the US?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: I love that we have fans all over the world. The fact that someone enjoys something that you create from nothing is pretty amazing. The fans in the UK are great! We haven't been to the UK in a long time. I miss it. I'm looking forward to having something booked to go back soon!

Altsounds: Which is your favourite Hoobastank track?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: I don't have a favorite. There's songs that I'm more proud of writing than others. For example "What happened to us?", "Right before your eyes (daredevil soundtrack)", and "The first of me" are ttracks I am really proud of.

Altsounds: Who are your favourite bands and why?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: I don't know if I have favorite bands any more. Here is what I like... [Editor- Get Ready for a Myspaceathon - we haven't checked one of these links this is just how it came]
  • ...WHY NOT!?!?!?!?! [Editor: "Phew My arm almost fell off then. How can you group John Lennon, Blind Meon and U2 to one Myspace profile. I must check to see what happens when you click THAT link!]
Altsounds: Do you write the tracks as a band or does one (or two) of you tend to write the tracks individually?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: On for(n)ever, most of the songs were written individually. I would come up with something at home. I would fully record it with drums, bass and guitar before playing it for anyone in the band. Next, I would e-mail the completed idea to Doug. He would toss it around a bit and come up with some vocal ideas and then we would get together to fix things. The songwriting in this band has been done every way possible though. We've written songs all together before too.

Altsounds; One of my favourite tracks is 'Outta Control', but this is very different in style to a song like 'The Reason'. Do you deliberately aim to make your tracks sound different, or does it just turn out that way?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: It just turns out that way. When playing guitar, bass, drums or piano, I just play. If I play something heavy and I like it, it turns into something. If something comes out and it's slow and it moves me, it becomes a slower song. It just kind of happens how it happens.

Altsounds: What does the future hold for Hoobastank?

Hoobastank [Dan Estrin]: Touring, making records, meeting fans, seeing new places and makin babies...all over the world!

Hell that sounds like some kind of messed up orgy to me! Check out the awesome Hoobastank right now who should be paying for all your ears. Safe.

What a bell end! All of his bands Myspace links are just repetitive links to his own Myspace page which has no music. Why not just put a bunch of bands you dig rather than painstakingly linking [and fucking up linking] a shit load of bands back to your own profile that has nothing on it other than something you would see on any douches profile.

Hi, my name is Dan Estrin and I want attention. Penis.

Haha, next time I ask that question I will specify that they're not allowed to do that. Its a shame because it's my first email interview and I thought the rest of it was not that bad. Damn you Dan Estrin!
