"Maturity is a bitch!"

So say Young Fathers, three shining young rap stars from our very own Scotland (We don't actually own Scotland, but it is close-by). Frequently compared to Spank Rock and The Cool Kids, and very favourably reviewed by both Transparent Magazine and the mighty NME, their crazy blend of rap, electro-pop and hip-hop teeters on the edge of overtaking the world. The big question is, will the Young Fathers do it in gorilla suits?

Altsounds: NME's August article refers to you as 'The best Scottish rap group of all time, or the only one?'. Discuss.
Young Fathers: Well I know for a fact we're not the only ones. Ha-ha. You just need to take a walk through the hills and glens and you'll be bombarded with “emcees” running around like savages spitting all over you as you try to take your dog for a peaceful walk. Joking... There isn't that many but there is a scene. Not very big but you do get a few hip hop nights with emcee battles and performances from local acts. That's how we began so we're thankful for it but most of the material is primarily underground so I can understand why people would think we're the only ones.

Altsounds: Describe the band's sound in three fantastic words.
Young Fathers: F*!ked up boyband

Altsounds: Who or what would you say is the biggest influence on your music?
Young Fathers: The ability to make a good ring-tone.

Altsounds: What are you more excited about, the single release or the album release?
Young Fathers: Both are pretty exciting....maybe the album as it is a body of work which we had extreme fun making so it would be nice for people to listen to the whole project and get the mental image of the three of us jumping around in a studio hitting instruments with with soft feathered mallets.

Altsounds: What and where was the first gig you ever played, and what are your memories of it?
Young Fathers: The first gig we ever played together was when we were 16 at a club in Edinburgh called “The Venue” (R.I.P), it was an open mic competition. We lost. So we never got the £50 prize. I'm sure it was a fix but. One day we'll get to the bottom of it and expose those responsible.

Altsounds: One reviewer described the Young Fathers' production style as akin to N*E*R*D*. Do you think there's any truth in that? Is it a compliment?
Young Fathers: I think its some of the “peeeow-peeeow” synth sounds we used. In no way did we set out to do that. But its nice to be boxed in with a band like N.E.R.D. We went to see them a little while back. People were actually flying through the crowd. Not crowd-surfing....FLYING.

Altsounds: Who would you most like to be interviewed by?
Young Fathers: Jeremy Kyle.

Altsounds: What would be the best thing a reviewer or journalist could ever say about you?
Young Fathers: I want to have your first born child.

Altsounds: As a band, what musical accolade would you most like to receive?
Young Fathers: £50 for first prize in an emcee competition. But that will never happen.

Altsounds: If you could choose who won the Brits Lifetime Achievement Award next year, who would you give it to and why?
Young Fathers: Mick Hucknall. We love his face and so should you.

Altsounds: What can fans of Young Fathers expect over the next 12 months?
Young Fathers: A rise in population and an album.

Altsounds: Gorilla suits and ping pong? Please explain….
Young Fathers: Picture this. The three of us arguing with a man claiming his name was “Simon De Vos” about how his paintbrush was not infact a paintbrush it was actually a ping pong racket...and so on...and so on. You know how the story goes.

Altsounds: Please feel free to promote whatever you want here.
Young Fathers: Young Fathers – Straight Back On It Released December 8th 2o08.
Album “Inconceivable Child.......Conceived” Released beginning of 2009.
