The New Altsounds: Leaner, Meaner and GREENER!
Like Bono, minus the deafening sucking sound.... ya know, cause he sucks!

Our apologies for the newsletter delay... Altsounds has gone green!

Every little bit helps and Altsounds dedicated Sunday and Monday this week to reducing our carbon footprint by more than 80%!! People don't really think about the energy that is consumed by websites on the internet, but data centers and internet services will soon produce more waste than the entire airline industry. Every time you turn your computer on or send an email, you're emitting CO2 into the atmosphere. Seems like it would be negligible amounts, but it adds up quickly!!

Altsounds is getting pretty big so we had to do the responsible thing here. What does this mean for you? Well you don't have to feel guilty when you visit Altsounds for one thing. When you drop by the site, download songs, watch videos, play in the arcade or just hang out reading news and reviews, you can be confident that you are not destroying the planet. Also! Altsounds using less energy means the site will actually run MORE efficiently. Pages load faster, email alerts come sooner and you never have to wait for the newest edition of 8 Pints In.

We do it because we care.

Music That's Hot
With a plethora of music to sieve through below is the cream of this weeks ever abundant musical crop.

Passion Pit - Chunk of Change
Frenchkiss Records
December 13, 2008, 08:12 PM
Buy Passion Pit - Chunk of Change From Amazon.com

Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is, as holidays go, particularly over-hyped, overrated and most importantly over-commercialised and over-marketed. I could go on, but this isn’t a review of February 14th, and anyway my point here is that despite the day being rather naff, it has now given the world something to truly love: Passion Pit’s ‘Chuck of Change’. Intended rather romantically (just why couldn’t he have done it any other day?) as a last minute Valentine’s Day present to Passion Pit’s singer/songwriter/all round main man Michael Angelakos’ girlfriend, ‘Chunk of Change’ is now his first gift to the whole world. And what a gift; I’m really rather smitten.

I am sure the lady in question must have been rather impressed; rather than Angelakos spending his dollop of dollar on a bunch of flowers...

Bayside - Shudder [ALBUM]
Victory Records
December 13, 2008, 08:01 PM
Buy Bayside - Shudder [ALBUM] From Amazon.com

I'm a huge fan of Bayside so I'll try and rule out any bias in this review, but it's very hard to not give these guys a great review. Returning to the scene with "Shudder", their fourth full-length release on Victory Records, Bayside stated that they wanted to be a different band for the next 18 months and described that they wanted to "make a punk record". It's not punk like The Misfits or the Sex Pistols, but it's a lot more punk and fast-paced than Bayside's last release, "The Walking Wounded" - and in my opinion, that's a great thing.

Shudder starts off with "Boy" and immediately you are hit with the faster tempo of the new release and the strong guitar riffs that drive the song forward until you are faced with front man Raneri's faultless vocals...

Ruben Angel - Stereo Is Dead [Album]
Diamond Life Entertainment
December 11, 2008, 11:56 PM
Buy Ruben Angel - Stereo Is Dead [Album] From Amazon.com

"There was a time in popular music where versatility proved the key ingredient to many artists’ success. But somewhere along the way, versatility took a back seat to predictability. That’s where Ruben Angel comes to the rescue." - taken from Ruben Angel's Bio

This couldn't be a more false statement. Ruben Angel provides nothing versatile to the music industry with "Stereo Is Dead". There is no other way to describe his music other than "Justin Timberlake meets Michael Jackson in a blender". You can hear what he is trying to achieve in his music, yet nothing comes close. This is pop music, at it's most boring.

Opening track 'Stereo Is Dead' is the best material on the whole record. Up-beat drums, some good production and an Nsync style of music writing...

James Rotondi, The Bad Eliots frontman
"'Cat's Meow' was the excuse for us to become The Monkees."
December 9, 2008, 10:36 PM

James Rotondi is a genre-bouncing jack of all trades. From the ambient electronica of AIR to the freak rock stylings of Mr. Bungle to the old school garage rock of his latest project, The Bad Eliots, Rotondi knows that flexibility and diversity are essential when it comes to surviving in such a fickle industry.

It's near impossible to predict what projects will be successful and what projects won't, which is why it shouldn't come as a surprise that what started as friends playing in a studio to write a song for a Snapple commercial has turned into one of the hottest bands without an album in music today.

I had the opportunity to speak with James Rotondi, creator of the Bad Eliots, to get a glimpse into the mind of this Renaissance man and get more details on his current projects...

Rev Theory Q&A Interview With Rich Luzzi
"Personally I'd give up the fame. The fame part is not real. It is all perception."
December 11, 2008, 05:08 PM

Back in May 2008 Altsounds.com had a chat with Julien from Rev Theory with regards to their up and coming album. Since then they have released "Light it Up" on Interscope Records and have toured A LOT with it. We were lucky enough to be given a chance to talk with Rev Theory again so we decided to follow on from where we had left off and ask the guys the questions we didn't last time!

Altounds: When we spoke to you last, you were just finishing up a tour with Seether and Flyleaf and had just released your second album Light It Up. Now you're heading out with Hinder and Trapt for the Jägermeister Music Tour. Do you ever stop?!
Ha! No man we are focused. We love being on tour, it's really one of the only things you can control in your career [your live show], so we are going to stay out as long as we can...

Fat Freddys Drop - Live @ The Roundhouse
5 December 2008

December 10, 2008, 10:27 PM

Never having been to The Roundhouse prior to tonight, I am amazed at what a spectacular venue the converted rail roundhouse is. Deceivingly spacious upon first inspection, although decreasing every moment with each eager Fat Freddys Drop fan that pours in the doors. In no time at all, the Roundhouse is literally packed, entire first and second floors, with people ready for a night of chilled out, soulful beats from the 8 strong Fat Freddys Drop boys.

The lights dim in the capacity room, and one by one the boys wander on stage, with the biggest reception given to lead singer Joe Dukie (AKA Dallas Tamaira). The brass section, compiled of Tony Chang (AKA Toby Laing), Scott Tower and Ho Pepa (AKA Joe Lindsay), look like a version of the Blues Brothers with their suits and bowlers. Big man behind the beats DJ Mu (AKA Chris Faiumu) looks comfortable in a ‘head of the table’ kind of way, tucked away in the corner letting the other guys take the spotlight....

Eskimo Joe - Live @ the Electric Ballroom
4 December 2008
December 8, 2008, 01:38 AM

Having only seen Eskimo Joe live on a festival bill and never at a headlining gig, I was intrigued to see how they would hold up on their own at the only London date on their most recent UK tour.

The sold out Electric Ballroom was literally bulging at the seams with excitable fans, when the three Australian lads file onstage (plus Lee Jones on keys and Shaun Sibbes on drums) and begin with the single ‘Sarah’ from third album Black Fingernails Red Wine. From the first note, the crowd pick the song and begin to bust it out along with lead singer Kav Temperley.
‘Sarah’ is the perfect track to begin with – obviously familiar to many and powerful with its driving beat. Temperley lets the crowd take over in the breakdown, where everyone can be heard “Emergency/I think I am falling apart/Emergency/I think I am losing the fight”....

Last Orders!

Keep your eyes peeled this week for the official Altsounds Best of 2008 list. I had a heckuva time coming up with my list, personally. Not a lot of amazing stuff in 2008. But our crack team of writers and tastemakers have picked out all the gems and made a list so precise in its correctness that 2008 will be remembered as a musical renaissance instead of...well, you know.

No one brings it to you like Altsounds.

Imagine how much damage you're doing to the planet when you go to other sites.

Shame on you.
