British Music @ it's Freshest ! 2009 promises to be a big year for our little bands/artists from the UK. The big wigs over at UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), the major trade organizations AIM (Association of Independent Music) and rights collecting societies PRS for Music have very kindly chucked a load of money into showcasing our UK acts at SXSW 2009. The International presense for the festival this year is unbelievable, good on those big wigs for pulling their fingers out. All the big names are there this year, the likes of: Gallows, Laura Marling, The Whip, Rolo Tomassi, Aqualung, We Have Band, You Me At Six, Bring Me To The Horizin & sooooo many more. Our brilliant team here @ Altsounds is dedicated to bringing you the bestest music you could ever imagine, so keep on the look out for these Bands/Artists popping up in our News and Reviews sections. If your not lucky enough to attend this years MASSIVE music event then here is the run down of the best UK Bands/Artists set to play, have a listen to their Myspace, you know you want to! HOT HOT HOT! These are the big names to hit SXSW this year, watch this space LAURA MARLING ![]() Laura Marling doesn’t merely sing about what’s to be expected from someone her age - love, lust and romance. The futility of religion, self-loathing and human psychology are also common themes in her provocative, extremely mature creations. With comparisons to folk heroes Joni Mitchell and Carole King, as well as Kate Bush, her deft, cool phrasing is suggestive of someone who has a story to tell, and knows how to tell it. Laura Marling on MySpace Music - WE HAVE BAND ![]() We fell hard for these ex-EMI staffers and disco-funk subversives when they landed in our laps in 2008. A series of increasingly addictive MP3 releases – plus an awesome cover of Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’ and an unforgettable NME Radio party performance – further cemented our unconditional love. We Have Band on MySpace Music - GALLOWS ![]() Gallows formed in Watford in 2005 from the ashes of two local bands. They arrived in 2006, tore 2007 a new arsehole and pretty much owned the best part 2008. Their 2006 debut Orchestra Of Wolves was the flaming shit parcel hurled through an open window of the music scene; the concrete poured in the shallow, stagnant pond of pretenders. GALLOWS on MySpace Music - BRING ME TO THE HORIZON Bring Me the Horizon are five young British lads with a penchant for the heavy...they have quickly established themselves as THE band that everyone wants to watch with their incendiary live show. BRING ME THE HORIZON on MySpace Music - YOU ME AT SIX ![]() You Me At Six’s pop-rock debut has earned them award nominations, sold out tours and millions of followers on MySpace in the UK. Their first ever USA performance will be at the SXSW Kerrang! Showcase and one not to miss. You Me At Six on MySpace Music - ROLO TOMASSI Hassle Records newest signings, Rolo Tomassi are a fresh-faced bunch straight from the Steel City (Sheffield), playing some of the most frenetic, insane and jaw-dropping tunes around. Combining elements of punk, hardcore, post-rock, electronica, jazz and full on metal, it's an aural assault, but of the hippest, knowing kind, and in frontwoman Eva, they posess the most natural star to emerge from the UK underground in years. Forming in 2005, the band self-released their first demo, and followed this up by a self-titled EP; their debut LP 'Hysterics' was released in September 2008 on Hassle. Rolo Tomassi on MySpace Music - THE WHIP ![]() 1am. Saturday, November 17, 2007. Manchester. In a disused WWII air raid shelter under Piccadilly Station, local heroes The Whip have 2000 rabid Mancunians eating out of their latex, mechanised palm. As 'Trash' - "an electro rock epic" (copyright Mixmag) - reaches its jagged peaks, the Warehouse Project explodes in an ear-bursting, elemental frenzy of air punching, pogoing and vicious movement. There is no trickery here. No expensive visuals, no Topshop new rave outfits, no gimmicks, just a band - utterly in tune with the crossover electro-rock spirit of the times, creating scenes of northern rave mayhem the equal of anything ever witnessed at Electric Chair or Bugged Out THE WHIP on MySpace Music - SKYLARKIN ![]() Sky Larkin's ascent has been rapid and invigorating. The trio's pair of pre-album singles 'Fossil, I' and 'Beeline' have swelled interest and love in the band, prior to the release of their debut album, The Golden Spike. Signed to mighty indie Wichita (bloc party, etc) 2009 looks bright. Sky Larkin on MySpace Music - THE HOT MELTS ![]() Electrifying Liverpool four-piece The Hot Melts are the first signing to Epitaph’s brand new UK based imprint, Wonderland Records. With blistering rock’n’roll power pop, The Hot Melts mix the best sounds of both sides of the Atlantic - a salty Wirral accent and warts-and-all storytelling with the typically US big, dense, hard-riffing sound. With influences including Pulp, Weezer, Blur, The Chiffons, The Smoking Popes and Grandaddy, The Hot Melts have released their first single (I Wish I Had)Never Been In Love last November 2008. Second single Edith is about to drop this March, with a full album release scheduled for later this year and first signs are it’s going to be very special. The Hot Melts on MySpace Music - FRIENDS ELECTRIC ![]() Friends Electric are a four-piece electro outfit from South Wales, influenced by acts such as Talking Heads, Daft Punk, Toyshop Murders and Mew. Formed in the past year, the band have already received strong support from BBC Radio 1, a nomination for an XFM/Pop Factory award and a show at the UK music industry's annual In The City conference in Manchester, England. Having built a loyal and ever-expanding following, they have recently played with Alphabeat, Ladyhawke and The Whip. Friends Electric on MySpace Music - SAM ISAAC The Sam Isaac show frequently resembles an indie cottage industry. Friends make artwork, do recording, direct music videos and carry clipboards. Perfect strangers sell his CDs. Sam's part of the bargain is donning an acoustic guitar and making music. Sam has shared the stage with acts like Scouting For Girls, Frank Turner, Kate Walsh, Polytechnic and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Sam Isaac on MySpace Music - IN CASE OF FIRE ![]() In Case Of Fire - write down that name, you're going to want to remember it - prove themselves one of the best new bands in Britain. Watching In Case Of Fire, you get a similar feeling to watching Muse back in 1999, where despite the lowly venues it's obvious that there's a special talent at play, ready to catapult them to the top of their game. In Case Of Fire on MySpace Music - FIGHTING WITH WIRE ![]() Ireland's Fighting With Wire imbue classic 90s grunge influences with a fierce punk aesthetic and a melodic sensibility that recalls Nirvana, Jimmy Eat World, Soundgarden and Foo Fighters in equal measure. Devastatingly tight, refreshingly accessible and thrillingly entertaining - this is YOUR band! Fighting With Wire on MySpace Music - TWIN ATLANTIC ![]() Having shared the stage with artists such as The Subways, Biffy Clyro, Thrice, Say Anything, and the Smashing Pumpkins, this four-piece Glasgow outfit are preparing to embark on a headline tour in the UK to kick off Glasgow’s 900 capacity QMU. Signed to GunsGoBang / King Tuts Recordings, Twin Atlantic will be heading across the ocean for their debut US performance at this year’s SXSW. TWIN ATLANTIC on MySpace Music - SKIBUNNY ![]() Electro-pop from Northern Ireland's legendary djs, remixers, promoters and now three piece band. Skibunny have played everywhere from Tokyo to Moscow, from Glastonbury to New York. File next to Depeche Mode, Afghan Whigs and Goldfrapp. SKIBUNNY on MySpace Music - HATCHAM SOCIAL ![]() The New Cross fuzzy popsters have been steadily releasing increasingly sought-after seven-inches for a while now, building an ever-hungry fanbase across the globe for their Orange Juice-inspired lo-fi racket. Their drummer used to play for Klaxons you know. Hatcham Social on MySpace Music - AQUALUNG ![]() Racking up 300,000 sales of his US debut, Matt Hales is no stranger to US audiences. He's recently turned his attention to writing songs for other artists, and is excited to be co-writing with various chart-topping writers, including Guy Chambers. He recently produced the debut album “March Forth” by Brooklyn-based duo Kaiser Cartel. But Aqualung hasn’t gone away – Matt recently released a new album for new label Verve “Words & Music”, so the Aqualung story is far from over, as he continues to pursue his ambition to make, in his own words, “grown-up music, and to write songs about this curious world that are truthful, articulate, candid, poetic, sometimes beautiful and occasionally a bit strange.” AQUALUNG on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads - SLOW CLUB ![]() Slow Club are more than charming anti-folk troubadours or the lo-fi acoustic end of the Sheffield scene; they are the real thing. Live as on record, Charles and Rebecca enrapture audiences with the same involuntary joy and simplistic rush that they themselves imbue. Charles with bruised vocal, a rasping guitar and disarming lightness of touch, casts unlikely wit against Rebecca’s angelic vocal and cheeky turn of phrase, amid her wild array of percussive apparatus including wooden chairs, glass bottles, and spoons. With a brace of acclaimed singles under their belts the duo are set to release their debut album on Moshi Moshi later this Spring. SLOW CLUB on MySpace Music - Dananananaykroyd ![]() 2009 is the year for Glaswegian sextet Dananananaykroyd. Their unique brand of fun loving Post-hardcore/Heavy Alternative/Art Rock (also known as Fight-pop) has been winning hearts and capturing fans across the UK music scene whilst the band have toured tirelessly with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Foals, Futureheads and Johnny Foreigner. ‘Hey Everyone’, their debut album, preceded by single ‘Black Wax’, already a live favorite will break every boundary, every preconception and stamp ‘FIGHT POP’ across the world’s collective face in the loudest possible way. DANANANANAYKROYD on MySpace Music - & Many more bands from the UK will be appearing at SXSW this year. Look out for the Full line-up and Schedule coming to Altsounds very soooon! |
Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! Nice feature Jack. You have no idea how much I want to go to this festival one year, but it's just so goddam expensive. Can you imagine a few of us reviewing this festival? It's so big that the whole site could be dedicated to it surrounding the event. |
Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! Ah thanks man, it was more of a copy and paste jobby from a press release. I will get the full schedule up soon I really wanna go too, the PR asked me if i wanted tickets aswell, so annoying. |
Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! Yeah there would be no problem getting free passes I reckon, as it's a festival for the benefit of the music business and it's promotion, but it's the flights that are so expensive. We should do a fund raiser for next year ;) |
Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! I removed Cancer Bats cause they are Canadian. |
Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! nice! sxsw is one of those events everyone wants to attend but so very few get to =( nice to see Rolo Tomassi being one of the great british hopes though. |

Re: British Music @ it's Freshest ! Heres a few more acts to check out for the festival. Not so English this time. Lissy Trullie (www.myspace.com/lissytrullie) Lissy Trullie, fresh off the release of their debut EP Self-Taught Learner (American Myth), have been getting an encouraging reponse for their efforts. They were recently featured in a New Yorker "Critics Notebook" and Spin named them one of New York's "finest new bands." Going on to say that "Trullie serves up tough new-wave riffs and throatily sung girl-group melodies that are as effortlessly cool as her favorite black leather jacket." The Village Voice noted that "Trullie's potential lies in her songs and the way she performs them: catchy yet disaffected, shot through with boozy energy and laden with the rawest guitar work possible." Her voice they said is a "Nico-like alto (which she mixes up with dashes of ethereal falsetto) untouchable even by Julian Casablancas." Just back from their first national tour with The Virgins, following SXSW Lissy Trullie head to England to play some shows in support of their 7" single for Boy Boy out on Make Mine Records. March 18th @ 9pm: Wichita Records Showcase @ Red 7 Patio March 19th @ 3:20pm: Schuba's Day Party @ Yard Dog March 21st @ 2:30 pm: Scruffy Bird Party @ Lamberts ______________________________ ______________________ The Felice Brothers (www.myspace.com/thefelicebrothers) The Felice Brothers (Simone, Ian, and James) and their long time friends and band mates Greg Farley and Christmas Clapton, come to us from the Catskill Mountains, where a homegrown sound has been working its way through the bloodlines for generations. Their rambling journey so far has brought them from busking in New York City subway stations, to tours across the world that have included enthusiastically received performances at major music festivals including Bonnaroo, All Points West, Outside Lands, and Langerado. In 2008 their Self-Titled release gained widespread acclaim. No Depression raved that the "ethereal, guns-and-sex-and-Dust-Bowl-metaphora infused" album could "not be understated." "You won't find more American music than that of The Felice Brothers," wrote the New York Daily News. "With their wheezing accordions, broken-down pianos, flinty acoustic guitars and creaky vocals, the brothers capture the history - and mystery - of rural America." There new record Yonder Is The Clock is out on Team Love Records April 7th. March 20th @ 10 PM: Ground Control Showcase @ Habana Bar Patio/Backyard ______________________________ ______________________ Fight Like Apes (www.myspace.com/fightlikeapesmusic) The feisty Irish band is emphatically pro-profanity and anti-mundanity, Fight Like Apes choose music as their weapon; a synth-stained hybrid of tasers and nunchucks in high-voltage pop songs the size of Saturn. The NME wrote, "Imagine Neon Neon invited round to The Breeders' place for a spot of light indie S&M... ...If yelping frontwoman MayKay doesn't end up ruling 2009, there's arse all justice in the world." Their debut EP in the US is due out on March 9th. Fluxblog writes that they "specialize in bold, urgent pop songs that lean hard on the propulsive dynamics of post-Pixies alt-rock while stripping out the guitars and replacing them with colorful synth textures." And they have Idolator charmed with their wit. March 19th @ 1am: Music From Ireland Showcase @ The Rio March 20th @ 3:10pm: Full Irish Breakfast Party @ BD Riely's ______________________________ _______________________ Hesta Prynn (www.myspace.com/hestaprynn) Might sound like a new name, but actually it's a project started by one of the ladies from Hip Hop trio Northern State. It's not Hip Hop though, they're songs she wrote while on tour with Tegan and Sara for their recent European and US dates. With some help from Sara, Hesta Prynn went into the studio with her producer friend Chuck Brody (Lykke Li, Trouble Andrew, Santogold) and began recording. The result has been some stunning indie rock infused electro pop, and she's drawing from all corners for input and inspiration. Collaborating with Brooklyn band Bear Hands, and Tim Harrington, the lead singer of Les Savy Fav. Check out a preview of what's to come on MySpace. March 18th @ 1am: @ Maggie Mae's Rooftop March 19th @ 12:45pm: Girls Rock Camp Party @ Whole Foods Rooftop ______________________________ ________________________ LoveLikeFire (www.myspace.com/lovelikefire) The San Francisco band had a very productive 2008. They signed a deal with Heist or Hit Records in the UK, and went into Tiny Telephone Studios to record their full-length. A preview of those efforts may be seen and heard in the video for the single "William" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTwG-VhleDA Still unsigned in the United States, it hasn't stopped the ambitious quartet from self-booking multiple national tours, and self-releasing two EPs that have been critically acclaimed. Spin.com praised their "beautifully orchestrated rock," that "embraces an emotionally tinged, Radiohead-tinted likeness, reaching soulful heights thanks to haunting background string arrangements." March 18th @ 9:45pm: Giant Steps Party @ The Moose Lounge March 19th @ 3:50pm: @ Plush Lounge March 20th @ 4:30: @ The Wave ______________________________ _________________________ Tigercity (www.myspace.com/tigercity) In the midst of a tour ahead of their european debut later this month, Tigercity bring their sound back to Austin. After a long and cold winter hibernation in Brooklyn they unveiled two new songs from their recording these past few months with producer Chuck Brody. The songs "Fake Gold" and "Mallory" exemplify the bands continued progress as songwriters and recording artists. With crisp guitars, joint melting bass, and crystal synths, they construct what The Times in London recently described as "silky, button-pushing daydream pop." A Rolling Stone band "On The Edge", Tigercity are sure to get people moving at their shows this SXSW. March 18th @ 8:00pm: @ The Paradise March 20th @ 9:00pm: @ Speakeasy ______________________________ _________________________ Ungdomskulen (www.myspace.com/ungdomskulen) Norwegian power trio Ungdomskulen return with their new album Bisexual, available digitally in the US on March 2nd. Bisexual follows up on their debut record Cry-baby, which Pitchfork described as "all motion, mixing indie-rock lightning with heavy-metal thunder and revealing a belief in rock's spiritual powers." They also confused school children and received wide acclaim for the innovative video for the single "Modern Drummer". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdBFvaxeKf8 March 19th @ 11:00pm: @ Spiro's Amphitheatre |
