8 Pints In | Issue #30 - Hot enough for Mungo Jerry

The Altsounds Concentrate | Monday 6th July 2009

It's summer time and I'm sweating my balls off already. I got a sunburn driving to the bank today. Yeah, it was only 10 minutes away. The absolute LAST thing I want to do is go out in this heat, so you know what that means... A SUMMER SPENT HANGING OUT ON ALTSOUNDS!

I'm not gonna lie and say it's the best way to beat the heat. But I will tell you the TRUTH and say it's the best way to keep yourself glued to the computer and inside your house, away from the evil bastard devil sun.

Get started reading everything in this newsletter and click every link. It'll cool off before you know it!

You like good music yes? Well Altsounds sorts the men from the boys. Here are the best releases to get your ears all moist.

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers [Album]

Firstly I feel that there has to be some clarification made about 'Journal For Plague Lovers' for all that has been bandied around about the album it isn't The Holy Bible Part II and to come into this album thinking that will leave you feeling maybe a little short changed; that being said...

El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez Lopez – Cryptomnesia [Album]

Fingers, pies, strings, bows, all words that would be suitably used in a sentence to describe Omar’s musical activity. Cryptomnesia is the 12th solo release in a 5 year period for Omar, in addition to the 5 Mars Volta releases .....

Sparrow & The Workshop - Sleight Of Hand [EP]

If I were to casually utter the phrase "Glaswegian Americana" amongst friends chances are they would eye me up with a mixed sense of bemusement and curiosity. Sparrow and the Workshop could be summed up almost to a 'T' using that very phrase and it is in no way meant as an insult, far from it in fact.....

An advisory “do not listen” comes attached to these releases. Altsounds is not afraid to speak it’s mind.

Amnesia - Versus The Bear [EP]

Not one for listening to metal (except for a 3 month period in my mid-teens [the “emo” phase]) it was a bit of a shock hearing Amnesia. The lead “singer” really sounds like he needs some Strepsils, screaming and shouting like the creature in Jeepers Creatures .....

Speaking with the bestest artists of today about their goings on and private matters you all want to know about.

THE JOY FORMIDABLE
"Ssshh...f*ck off, you’re dumped"

I’ll keep this introduction as short as I possibly can, as the interview that follows is anything but. For those of you not yet fortunate enough to know of The Joy Formidable, they are a three piece, primarily from Mold in North Wales. Originally a four-piece known as Sidecar Kisses in 2006, they dropped their bassist in 2007...

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART
Someone told me, "I must either have you or kill you".

It’s fair to say that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have become a certified indie phenomenon, breaking out from the fertile Brooklyn scene with an infectious pop sound that has gained the band mainstream acclaim as the next great heirs to New York's rich musical tradition.....

You can be the first to say “Yeah I have heard of them, they were on Altsounds introducing".

THE JACKS
The Jacks debut single “Not Me Not You” OUT NOW!

In the spring of 2007 Dom - lead vocals, rhythm guitar and Paul - bass, backing vocals got themselves together to form a band in their home town of Northampton. They had gone to school together and had kept in touch through their different Universities.....

Bugera BTX36000 "The Nuke" Bass Amplifier Head

3,600 Watts of bass output? No that isn't a spelling mistake, I haven't added an extra 0 at the end by accident. WTF? Surely this can't be true? And if it is, who the hell needs 3,600 watts of power in an amplifier anyways? .....

Hey, since you're going to be all cooped up reading Altsounds this summer, why don't you also set aside a little time to listen to some BLEED ELECTRIC! This group is so sick, I can't wait to find out which remix wins the recent Acidplanet.com remix contest that was run in conjucion with Altsounds.com. If you have no idea what I'm talking about click this lovely image below:
