The Lowdown: Bluebrain

"Paul McCartney post-Beatles gets written off too much and it simply isn't fair."

December 14, 2009, 11:02 PM

The Lowdown: Bluebrain
[altsounds] Do you have a blue brain? How cool would that be.

[Bluebrain] Very! And yes. I look like Avatar on the inside.

I guess social networking isn't your thing due to your Myspace (i.e lack of any content and friends)?

We're working on that. I'm suprised that dinosaur of a site is still around, honestly. We've been using one called BandCamp which is much better, I think. Also, we've just launched our own site www.Bluebra.in

You played a show with Lady Sovereign, what's she like?

We didn't get a chance to chat. However, during her set I watched her pour a beer on top of someone's head. So I'd imagine our interaction would've gone much the same way.

Do you want your band to become a "Cult Following"?

We'd love that, yes.

Speaking of Cult Following's, is "Bring Out Your Dead" anything to do with Monty Python?

In one way, it does. But in another, more accurate way, no.

What's your favourite Monty Python film?

Life Of Brian

What did the Romans ever do for us?

Right on.

What's it like being in a band with your brother? Do you fight all the time?

Constantly, with food and in slow motion.

Are you twins? Do you share the same clothes?

No and yes.

Did you decide when you were younger to make music together?

It sort of picked up where video games left off, I think. We became obsessed with getting a four-track (which was very difficult in the mid-nineties before the age of guitar center. It didn't help that we were in 5th grade). We finally got one for Christmas and it changed everything. We learned new instruments, wrote new songs...all in an effort to make more tapes. It was incredible. Absolutely mind-blowing.

Who had the bigger room when you were growing up?

I did. In 7th grade I moved into a room with my own bathroom. Hays never graduated to that level. He's never full recovered.

You are now classed as a "Duo" - how does that feel?

Dynamic.

What Aliases have you used for you remix work?

Jay-Z is one we've used quite a lot. Also Phil Spector and Nigel Godrich. Whenever you see work by any of these people you can be sure it is really us.

How do you describe "Clever Pop"...

Hopefully we haven't described ourselves that way. But maybe we did at some point. Anyways, I would say that band should be largely ignored and assumed to be jackasses at parties. No, our pop is quite Neanderthal.

What equipment are you guys running on your live sets?

We are both running a program called Ableton Live...this is the basic framework of our show as our two computers are synced up. We also use a bunch of soft synths and outboard stuff as well. Plus, as you can see from pictures, an obscene amount of microphones.

What's your most favoured piece of equipment?

If Hays were answering I'm sure he'd say one of the compressors he built or his ribbon microphone, but since he's not, I'm going to say it's a toy cowboy saloon made out of wood. The top is riveted and acts like a a guirro or whatever the name of that percussive instrument...I think I'm getting it wrong. In any case, we've use that saloon on probably every recording we've ever done.

Anything you would like to say....

Yes...Yes I do. Paul McCartney post-Beatles gets written off too much and it simply isn't fair. The first few records he made after the break-up were really special, most notably 'Ram,' which has songs that really stand-up to many Beatles tracks. Just trust me, 'Dear Boy' is really worth giving a listen. As is Uncle Albert (wait till the second half.) I just think you all are cheating yourself for assuming he never created anything worth listening to.
