The Lowdown: Woodhands

The Lowdown: Woodhands

Canada is a magical land of ponies and rainbows, where everyone is nice to each other all the time and music is funded by the government.

After spending the past year and a half touring Canada, the United States, China, and Japan in support of Heart Attack, and delivering a slew of remixes and cover songs that have kept the party going strong, Woodhands is back with a stimulating plethora of darker, energetic dance tracks. The forthcoming sophomore offering from Woodhands, Remorsecapade, dives deeper into the emotional territory of Heart Attack, painting strangely compelling portraits of lost souls inhabiting the late night abyss of dance clubs (“I Should Have Gone With My Friends”), sweaty hand-holding (“Pockets”), and – of course – heartbreak, here described as ‘doubling’. The songs of Remorsecapade run from the deceptive bubble gum pop arrangement of “Dissembler” to the explosive punk rock/electro hybrid of “Coolchazine,” and throughout, Woodhands offers listeners a rich journey throughout the scorched landscape of what their sweaty brand of electronic has now become: Risky, emotionally resonant, and dangerously addictive.

[altsounds] Is being based in Canada a hindrance or a blessing?
[Woodhands] A blessing, of course! Canada is a magical land of ponies and rainbows, where everyone is nice to each other all the time and music is funded by the government. OK, maybe only one of those is true.

What is the organic element to your electronic music?
If you’ve seen us play you know what we mean – fingers flying all over instruments, sweat sweat sweat, and no laptops for miles around.

You have toured in Japan. Do you have a fanbase there now?
Yes. But we should probably get back there to shore up support.

Tell me about the City Sonic documentary series....
It’s a series that has musicians talking about special places where they played. For us that meant an abandoned brick-making factory. The night we played also featured a pig on a spit and hipsters doing their best Lord of the Flies imitations.

Do you have plans to move to the USA or indeed the UK?
That would be amazing. London is somewhere that’s always been appealing…they love electro there.

Who is your favourite current artist?
Gucci Mane.

Do you watch sports or movies and, if so, what is the best film you have ever seen and why?
We both like Brazil, and even though it might not be the best movie we’ve ever seen, we both agree it’s awesome. What’s not to like? It’s dark, psychedelic, thoughtful, and romantic. Just like us.

Is iTunes a good way to sell music these days?
YES.

What plans do you have for 2010?
We have a new album called Remorsecapade coming out in the spring and we will be touring all over the place throughout the year. Watch out!

Any tours of Europe coming up?
Yes.

What kind of cars do you drive?
We drive what we can get.

What is your stance on climate change?
We think it sucks.
