The Lowdown: David Huff from Giant

The Lowdown: David Huff from Giant

"I don't feel that I have even come close to hitting that pinnacle yet..."

After completing a review of their current release 'Promise Land', I was keen to find out more about 'Giant' and the thoughts of David Huff, the drummer. With a huge history spanning many years, die-hard fans around the world and many albums under their belt, 'Giant' are still a band with a lot more to offer.

Altsounds: Giant are not new to the international airwaves, but there are still some individuals who are unaware of your previous work. Would you call yourself a supergroup? You have members from various big name bands in your line up?

David: I would not call ourselves a "Super Group" I'll let others label us how they want to. We have all been involved very heavily in the music business and have been a part of some very successful artist though... John from Winger and Terry from Strangeways.

Altsounds: Does your music fit one genre, or is it ever changing?

David: I think that it fits into the melodic Rock genre, but to me that is ever changing, we are evolving every year too as a band because of all of the music that we are involved in individually - this we all bring to the band and it definitely influences our writing and playing.

Altsounds: You have built up a loyal fan base over the years who have always stayed true to your work, but have you seen a rise in new fans within the last few years?

David: I think that we have gained some new fans yes. Hopefully we will continue gaining new fans along the way and also filling the appetites of our loyal fans!

Altsounds: Where in the world do you find your most dedicated fans?

David: I think that, as far as I know, that Germany has been the base for the most fans for Giant.

Altsounds: Do you believe that new technology and the way music is released and promoted has benefited you? Which aspects have been most significant?

David: I'm not sure quite how it has benefited us other than we have been able to reach all over the world much quicker than before. Our release date was announced one time and it was received all over the world. I think that being able to access fans all over the globe is great.

Altsounds: What was the feeling prior to releasing ‘Promise Land’? Were you apprehensive?

David: We were very excited to be releasing a new album.. we wanted to just make good music, and I think that we achieved that.. we just hoped that our fans would enjoy the music as much as we enjoyed making it. We were not apprehensive making the album because we had the total support of the label Frontiers!

Altsounds: Having recently formed a partnership with Frontier Records to release this new album, has it taken you in a new direction?

David: I don't think that it took us in a new direction, I just think that it helped us to relink with our fans. Frontiers has been leading the charge of Melodic rock music, we were so happy to be working with Serafino and Mario and all at Frontiers!

Altsounds: There have been some line-up changes over the years, but has the ethos of ‘Giant’ as a band always remained the same?

David: Yes I think so, I think that we worked very hared to create the Giant 'Brand' and that was one of the main things that we stayed true to as we were making this album.

Altsounds: Do you approach the writing of new tracks in the same way as before? Has new developments in recording and production allowed for more creative opportunities?

David: I guess that we have approached things a little differently because of the ever changing music industry. We have definitely used technology to help us in making our music, everything from writing to recording. We used technology to help us with recording from two different studios at the same time, stuff like that.

Altsounds: Who do you look to for influence in the current music world?

David: I am influenced by pretty much all kinds of music. When music moves me, I take it in and I am sure that it comes out somehow in my writing, playing, production or mixing. I look for music and artists that say something from the heart, that comes from a real place when they are making it!

Altsounds: With so much experience, which moment would you mark as being the pinnacle of your musical career?

David: You know, I don't feel that I have even come close to hitting that pinnacle yet. I still have a ton of music to make and a bunch of great artists and musicians to work with! I will tell you when I hit that point, cool?

Altsounds: Can we expect to see Giant hitting the road any time soon? If, so, would these be an international circuit?

David: We really want to do some touring soon, we are talking to some agents to help up put tours together right now. I think that we would most likely start in Europe first since that seems to be where most of our fan base is.

Altsounds: If you were to make an appearance at any festival around the world, which would it be for you? And why?

David: I am not too familiar with all of the big festivals around the world unfortunately because I have been in the States working in the studios but I have certainly heard of some of them. We would love to play all of them!

Altsounds: What does the future hold for Giant? Are there any surprises in the pipeline?

David: We would like to tour once a year in Europe and Asia and we also would like to make more albums, we need fan feedback to accomplish this!

Altsounds: Is there anything you would like to say to the Altsounds readers and your fans?

David: We appreciate all of your support! Please let us know where you guys are out there so we can come and perform for you! Thanks again for supporting Giant!
