Name: Paul Carrack
Star sign: Taurus
Place of birth: Sheffield, England
Now based at: London England
Level of education: Comprehensive till 16 yrs. No qualifications
First instrument played: Drums
Current instrument: Guitar, keyboards
Last venue played at: Cambridge Corn Exchange
Last gig attended: Sting. Albert hall
Turn On: singing when in good voice, Sheffield Wednesday scoring a goal, eating good food, good wine by the sea
Biggest influence: Family. Grand mother, mother, father, aunts, uncles
who taught the values of honest hard work and respect.
Beatles all the Liverpool bands got me excited about playing music and after seeing The Beatles live at Sheffield City Hall I was a hopeless case. My elder brother introduced me to the soul of Ray Charles who, apart from being a great vocal interpreter, is also my favourite keyboard player. In my teens Motown and Soul music ruled a golden era of pop music with great, uplifting songs, amazing vocal performances from David Ruffin, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and wonderful, cool grooves from the Funk Brothers.
Childhood hero: Ringo Starr. After losing my father when I was just 11 years old, the optimistic music of The Beatles saved me.
When I was younger I wanted to be: Ringo, Bronco Layne
Last album bought: Adele. I'm a bit lazy about keeping up with what's going on musically outside my own little bubble but a friend plays this non stop in his car and I have to admit I love it. Not surprised it is phenomenally successful.
Last song listened to on mp3 player: Unforgettable. Nat King Cole.
Favourite current band: Fleet Foxes. Possibly very 'last year' but I love it.
My favourite drink has to be: Good Rioja. I'm at the optimum age for its beneficial medicinal qualities. My doctor says 'eat like a gourmet not a glutton and drink the best wine you can afford.
My favourite book is: I hardly read anything being a thick northerner but I really enjoyed Dylan's 'Chronicles'.
My favourite website: Owlstalk. An unofficial Sheffield Wednesday fan site. A lot of ill informed banter but often moments of great humour that makes me chuckle.
The best boredom buster is: I don't really get board. Another advantage of being thick. I'm a good daydreamer (or worrier).
The best film I ever saw was: I love 'The Dresser' starring Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney.
An effeminate personal assistant,(TC), of a deteriorating veteran actor (AF)struggles to get him through a difficult performance of King Lear. Reminds me of my tour manager and me.
My ultimate snack is: I try not to eat between meals and biscuits are banned at home but I don't mind a bit of dried mango.
The first thing I do when I wake up is: Check for cold symptoms. A singer’s nightmare on tour.
First band name: The Forerunners.
Best piece of advice given to me: Don't worry, be happy. Unfortunately I didn't take it and most of my life I lived by my poor old Mum's philosophy which seemed to be, 'if in doubt ,worry'
My biggest aspirations: I've achieved a lot more than I thought possible as a young , self taught musician so my main aspiration is to try to appreciate and enjoy what I already have in terms of family, friends and lifestyle.
Paul Carrack will be playing 3 intimate shows at The Britten Theatre, Royal College of Music, London on 26/27/28 April.
