Hello again my music-loving brethren to this second entry in my not so secretive diary of a festival addict. With the glorious stench of Hammerfest’s molten metal having abandoned my nostrils, it was time for me to hit the road again for my second ground shaking music festival of this pre-summer season. The very first Hit The Deck festival arrived in the beating heart of Nottingham city centre and with it came a saliva-drooling smorgasbord of 37 bands, including some of Britain’s brightest and best new rock and metal talents.

On the bill and bringing Nottingham to its knees was Kings Lynn quartet Deaf Havana, band of prey Hawk Eyes (formally Chickenhawk), rising nautical-named wonders We Are The Ocean, Goth’s golden boys My Passion and the always dependable Young Guns. If these acts alone weren’t enough to whet your proverbial rock whistle, topping off the day was the always sensational Welsh dynamos The Blackout, as well as criminally heavy Cancer Bats, equally satanic Sylosis and finally, ending the fest in face-melting style, American Christian metalcore clan Underoath. With all the action exploding across four separate stages in three indoor venues (Rock City, Rescue Rooms and Club Stealth), and all of which were within stumbling distance of each other, this foundational Hit The Deck was a one-day, campsite-less festival extravaganza no rock-loving, music-moshing, spirited-sapien should have overlooked. If you did then you needn’t worry. Wipe away those tears because I’ve documented the day, just for you. I know I know… I’m too good to you!

Now, cast your mind back to the morning of Sunday April 17th. I’m awoken in my hotel suite by the sound of complimentary breakfast being delivered to my door – rock and [bacon] roll! After this delicious bite to eat and a little morning telly, I proceed to get ready for the full day of festival rocking that lay ahead. With my suite overlooking Rock City’s main entrance (the picture above is the view from my window) I can see a queue of eager rocking beavers already forming. All suited and booted (suited being a Blackout T-shirt and booted being my trusty DC trainers) I head on out and make my way round to this primary venue (and location of two of the four stages) to exchange my golden ticket for a green and yellow wristband. To find out what went down after I gained entry into Nottingham’s inaugural Hit The Deck festival, you’re going to have to keep reading…
