Before New Found Glory’s epic sets at the Reading and Leeds festivals I sat down with guitarist Steve Klein of New Found Glory, where we talked about the new record, WWE, shitting in bags on the tour bus and extravagant presents from Billie Joe Armstong!
Altsounds: For the benefit of anyone living under a rock for the last decade, could you describe New Found Glory’s sound and tell us what you’re about?
Steve Klein: New Found Glory’s sound is a mixture of pop-punk, hardcore and pop music to a certain extent. All of our songs are about life and relationships, things that we’ve gone through as a band, personally or our friends, things that revolve in our life. Every record we make captures a time period of either the music we’re listening to or the relationships we have, anything that’s going on at the time. That’s why I feel people find our band relatable, because our songs are about everyday things that everyone experiences.
Altsounds: Let's talk about Radiosurgery, what are the main influences behind making this record and what can we expect to hear from it?
Steve Klein: Every record we make sounds like a New Found Glory record no matter how hard we try to do things that are different, because we can never change Jordan’s voice ‘cause he’s going to sing that way no matter what.
As far as going into the record making process, we wanted to go back to the roots and the music that got us into this style of music. We feel that a lot of bands in our genre have gone away from that, and I think listening to all those old bands renewed our love for pop-punk music and we wanted to incorporate that in our new style and become more straightforward and not really stray away from the excitement and the cool thing about this music that we started from.
So by doing that, and thinking of it that way, going into this record we feel like a new band. It doesn’t feel like our seventh or eighth record it feels like a fresh new one, once you hear it you’ll get what we’re saying about it.
Altsounds: You said that Jordan’s voice will never change, which is understandable, but musically Coming Home was a completely different New Found Glory album to what we usually hear.
Steve Klein: Yeah, musically we were different, but Jordan’s voice will never scream or change its style, but our music is constantly evolving as we’re always trying to test each other and do things that are different. A lot of our past records I felt we would write too many songs, and the record would be all over the place and people would be skipping around. For us we want a record to be a complete thought, you put on a CD and you listen to every song, all the way through and not just skip around the singles. We wanted everything to be cohesive, and with Radiosurgery we feel like more than ever we’ve captured that, you put on the CD and it’s a complete thought, lyrically, musically, everything.
Altsounds: I thought the new single, also titled ‘Radiosurgery’, had a very old school New Found Glory vibe about it.
Steve Klein: When you listen to the record it definitely feels like more like an old school New Found Glory record, just ‘cause it’s fun and catchy right away. You don’t have to think too hard, just party!
Altsounds: Where did the name Radiosurgery come from?
Steve Klein: Me and Chad were trying to think of record titles. He was going though Google and typing things and reading surgery books to try and find a right combination of words. It is the same way we came up with New Found Glory, just a combination of words that doesn’t sound like every other band. That’s the cool thing about old school bands is that they made up their own thing, so no one else could use that, like no one else could call their song 'Radiosurgery,' ‘cause it would be weird as we took a word and kind of made it our own. It’s like The Clash and The Ramones made their own style that no one can rip off, and we wanted to incorporate that as we feel a lot of bands have gone away from that.
Altsounds: So the same idea applied to your own genre Easycore I take it?
Steve Klein: Exactly, and now it’s Pop-Punk’s Not Dead, which is the tour we’re gonna do in the states
Altsounds: On previous records, from what I’ve read in various magazines/news sources over the years, it stated that Chad does a lot of the writing for New Found Glory. Has that changed as you’ve matured as a band?
Steve Klein: Chad writes the music and I write the lyrics, we all write the songs together in a room, but the idea’s come from Chad writing a riff and then demoing them, then I’ll call him on iChat and sing him ideas and be like “Hey this is my idea”, then it’s a case of “That’s cool”, “That’s not cool”, “I like this”, “I don’t like that”. Then once we have a song we bring it to the rest of the band.
Altsounds: I remember reading something in Total Guitar a few years back, when you released Sticks and Stones, that Chad wrote the bridge riff to ‘My Friends Over You’ on the toilet, how did that come about?
Steve Klein: Ideas come out anywhere, ya’know? Chad could be driving and he’ll say “I’m driving but I just came up with this riff ‘dun dun dun dundundun’” Then I’ll try and write it, that’s the thing about people who write music it’s all in your head and ideas can come out anywhere, whatever your doing.
Altsounds: When you are writing songs and you have an idea for the drums do you do the whole ‘dum dum dum dududududum’ thing?
Steve Klein: Yeah, although a lot of the time when Chad has a guitar riff in his head he has a drum idea as well. We’ll always come up with the initial idea then bring it to the band, it’s never me and Chad saying “That’s the way it is” ‘cause it’s a band, it’s five people. This is our idea and this is the skeleton we’ll start with, then everybody will be like “I like that”, “I don’t like that” and it'll go through the grinder.
Altsounds: New Found Glory are well known for their ‘globe-trotting’ exploits, having played in the UK, Japan, Australia, Belgium and Germany amongst others. What’s the best experience you’ve ever had as a band abroad?
Steve Klein: It’s pretty cool to be playing main stage Reading and Leeds, it’s pretty cool to be main stage any festival whether it’s Japan, Australia or anywhere else. Growing up we didn’t know if we’d play outside of Florida, or even in our hometown - never mind playing Reading and Leeds! It’s always pretty cool to be invited to play those festivals and we never take it for granted. We always get super exited and get the kids as pumped as possible, ‘cause they’ve spent the weekend there and they’ve seen so many other bands.
We try to come out and play a really strong set and go all out because we want them to remember it and have a good time. Reading and Leeds is for teens in the UK to remember for the rest of their lives, so they can be like “When I was younger I went to Reading and Leeds and saw New Found Glory, Nine Inch Nails or Metallica” so it’s cool.
Altsounds: Over the fourteen years you’ve been a band we’ve seen you release albums that are influenced by pop-punk, hardcore, classic rock, metal and even a bit of new wave. How have you kept your sound so fresh?
Steve Klein: By not getting jaded and always testing ourselves musically. We always have our ears to the ground and are always listening to new music so I think we’ll always be evolving. We don’t stick to one sound, we don’t put the same record out over and over again, I think that’s what people like about our band - every record has a different story.
It’ll have a different sound or be recorded differently and every time we play a live show we always give it one hundred and ten percent ‘cause that way the kids will come back next time. Once you’ve seen a band live you think you’ve seen it all, but you haven’t ‘cause it’s gone by so fast - at least our shows do!
We go from song to song to song. We always play as hard as we can ‘cause we don’t take it for granted and we appreciate the fans coming to see us and we want them to come back and buy records.
Altsounds: How on earth do you manage to pick a set list with so many fan favourites on each album?
Steve Klein: I know! We always pick the songs that we feel the fans love, and sometimes people get angry ‘cause we didn’t play a certain song, but we usually do a good job of picking a piece of each album. We don’t play as many coming home songs as we should ‘cause they’re kind of slower and we want the pace of the show to be non-stop.
Altsounds: When you first started playing shows in 1997, with Cyrus of course, did you ever expect ‘A New Found Glory’ to be where it is today?
Steve Klein: No [Laughs]. We just wanted to play in a band because we didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing at the time. People would be going to ball games or house parties and we’d be going to local shows and playing in bands.
All we wanted was to be part of the local scene where we were from, then all of sudden we started playing shows everywhere else! Chad was in a touring band before we started New Found Glory (with Shai Hulud), so he already knew what to do. So we started playing other shows ‘cause we got sick of playing in our hometown - there’s only so many times you can play there ya’know?
Then we played a show in New Jersey which got us on a compilation CD, and then the guys from Drive-Thru records saw us playing a pool party in South Florida, signed us, then bought us a van and sent us out on tour. It’s been fourteen years!
Altsounds: How does it feel when new pop-punk bands breaking through the ranks list New Found Glory as one of their main influences?
Steve Klein: It’s awesome and really flattering. What else am I supposed to say to that? “Ye they should” [Laughs]. It’s awesome that they do that ‘cause we try to run our band with integrity and try not to piss our fans off in any way. We do things DIY, even though we have managers and labels, we still do things our way and no one can tell us what to do, I feel we’ve done this long enough to know the right track
Altsounds: Who has the worst habits while on the road?
Steve Klein: I dunno, probably Ian because he’ll take a shit in a bag on the bus, he’ll put it in the toilet, shit in the bag, then throw it out the bus. It kinda sucks.
Altsounds: It’s no secret you love UFC, as proven on ‘Not Without A Fight’, but will we ever hear an NFG track on the WWE as an entrance track?
Steve Klein: I’d hope so, it’d be awesome! [Laughs]. Tell them to do it!
Altsounds: What’s the most influential song you’ve ever listened to?
Steve Klein: I guess I would say ‘Welcome To Paradise’ by Green Day ‘case it was the first song I ever learnt to play on the guitar.
Altsounds: You’ve toured with both Blink 182 and Green Day over the years but if you had to choose to listen to one of them which one would it be and why?
Steve Klein: Green Day. I probably listened to Blink 182 after Green Day, but for me Green Day have been consistent, they’ve never broken up, put out consistent records, put on an amazing live show and they’re fucking solid!
We toured with Green Day in Europe a few years back, Blink 182 were super awesome and we hung out with them a bunch, but Green Day bought us suits after the tour. I remember when Team America came out Billie Joe rented out an entire theatre for everyone that was on tour, and we were smoking and drinking watching the film. He would rent out bars just to hang out and stuff. He’s a really cool guy and he doesn’t like to separate himself.
Altsounds: On the subject of Blink 182, what was recording Not Without A Fight like with Mark Hoppus?
Steve Klein: It was awesome, Blink wasn’t together at the time so he was studying for scuba diving and working on other bands and +44. It was cool, it was like recording with Mark Hoppus, it was crazy and fun. We’d be recording in Travis’ studio so Travis would come down and give his ideas on things as well so it was really cool. But it was like working with any other producer.
Altsounds: Did he bring anything different to the table?
Steve: We kinda had the songs going into it, he had ideas towards sounds and stuff like, but he didn’t really do anything crazy to our songs or change them or anything.
Altsounds: What’s the best and worst gear you’ve ever played/toured with?
Steve Klein: I only play Fender and Mesa Boogie, I started with a Crate solid state amp, then moved to a Marshall solid state amp, then I bought a Marshall JCM 2000, then we toured with Snapcase, which was when I realized I wanted to sound like that. So I bought EMG pickups and a Mesa Boogie amp.
Altsounds: If I had the power to grant you the opportunity to choose anyone in the world, dead or alive, to collaborate on a record with who would it be?
Steve Klein: [Pause] Umm that’s a hard question [Long pause] Fuck, Notorious B.I.G. would be awesome [laughs] just to hear him rap over rock music would be cool. As far as rock bands go... [long pause] fuck I hate these on the spot questions [laughs]. [Pause] Huey Lewis and the News, Huey Lewis would be awesome!
Altsounds: On a festive side, will we ever hear another NFG Christmas single? ‘Ex Miss’ is my Christmas ringtone every year!
Steve Klein: Someone just asked us to do it for a compilation so we did it, I’m sure we can do another one.
Altsounds: When I first heard ‘Ex’ Miss’ I was like “This is the greatest Christmas song I’ve ever heard!”
Steve Klein: Yeah, I think it’s good for a band to write an original Christmas song rather than cover an old one.
Altsounds: Could you tell us something about yourselves that not a lot of people know about?
Steve Klein: We like sports, but everyone knows that already! [Pause]. We’re not as fun as you think we are. We go to movies, shows and do social media stuff. We just try to keep ourselves busy, which is why we’ve been a band for so long, we always try and keep each other down to earth. We’re a traveling family, we treat each other like brothers and fight like brothers, so we’ll go out and explore each city that we’re in.
Altsounds: You’ve started producing the new Man Overboard album, what’s it like being behind the desk rather than behind the screen?
Steve Klein: It was fun and I’ve wanted to do it for a long time but I’ve never had the time to. Man Overboard came together, we played a few shows with them and I made friends with the singer. We started emailing back and forth, he’d send me demos and it kept going like that for a while.
When it came down to picking a producer they said they wanted me to do it, and I was like “That’s Awesome!” I spent a few weeks with them in New Jersey, recorded the album and I think it sounds awesome, I’m really excited for them. They gave me a chance ‘cause they could’ve worked with Chad as he’s an amazing producer too, he’s done so many amazing records, for me it was about getting my foot in the door somehow and to doing it for a bigger, established band was awesome.
For us we’ve made so many records that we’ve seen the process done so many times that we can bring stuff to the table.
Altsounds: Have you ever thought about producing your own New Found Glory record?
Steve Klein: It’s always good to have a devil’s advocate, ‘cause we don’t wanna fight and kill each other. With me and Chad doing most of the writing we disagree on things and no one else is gonna tell us otherwise. Having a person that we trust that has worked on so many great records is a great help, so when he says something we respect it.
Altsounds: What can we expect from New Found Glory in the future? Will you continue playing shows and keep playing for as long as Green Day for instance?
Steve Klein: As long as the kids keep coming we’re gonna continue to make records. Our new record comes out later this year and we’re excited for that, ‘cause there’ll be a renewed excitement about our band. We’re gonna make our fans happy and hopefully gain some new ones. We’re always gaining new fans, ‘cause every time we play shows there’s younger kids coming, younger girls and dudes just getting into our band. It’s really great to see more people liking or band!
New Found Glory's new album 'Radiosurgery' is out in the UK on October 7th and the US October 8th.
Altsounds: For the benefit of anyone living under a rock for the last decade, could you describe New Found Glory’s sound and tell us what you’re about?

New Found Glory's new album 'Radiosurgery' is out in the UK on October 7th and the US October 8th.
