So the Altsounds Advent Calendar has reached its final day and with lots of great features under our belt, I will end the countdown with a continuation of the Christmas Covers article from the 17th day. Cover songs are one of those things that will either please or anger you. For example in recent weeks the wonderful Miss Leona Lewis decided to butcher the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt but when the late great Johnny Cash got his hands on the track in 2002, it has to be considered one of the best, most heartfelt tracks you are ever likely to hear. Hoverer, when it comes to covers of Christmas songs, in all honestly I am just glad to hear someone else give those songs a reworking!

If like me you have worked in retail or in fact left your house to do any Christmas shopping, at this point in the run up to Christmas you will be sick to the back teeth of those wonderfully joyous songs that have been on repeat for at least the last month of your life. From the infuriating screams of ‘It’s Christmas!!!’ from Noddy Holder or the pre-pubescent squeaking of Aled Jones in that song from The Snowman; you have just had enough. However, when a band/singer you actually like takes one of these songs and actually makes it sound quite good, you just cannot get enough of them!

What I have selected here is a number of classic Christmas hits that have been taken on by some of my favourite acts and made just that little bit better and might even make your Christmas playlist as you dig in to you festivities tomorrow!

COLDPLAY - 2000 Miles (The Pretenders)

LUCY ROSE – Driving Home for Christmas (Chris Rea)

JIMMY EAT WORLD – Last Christmas (Wham)

DOG IS DEAD – Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses)

THE MACCABEES – Walking in the Air (Aled Jones)

GLASVEGAS – Stay Another Day (East 17)

RADIOHEAD – Winter Wonderland (According to Wikipedia over 150 other artists!)

FLORENCE WELCH & BILLY BRAGG – Fairy Tale of New York
