"Music is just a massive playground for these three girls who put the fun back into funk"
When Stooshe’s mixtape, The Stoosh Tape, which was produced by Futurecut (Lily Allen, Wretch32, Plan B), landed in my inbox a few months ago, I was instantly caught in the whirlwind that’s swirled them into the instantaneous hit that they’ve become in one short year. Stooshe are probably the most colourful, playful and groundbreaking threesome that’s hit the music world since Destiny’s Child. Courtney and the gang have definitely shaken the settled glitter of the music scene snow globe, painting the world as they slowly take over with their urban pop British brash beats.
Good things come to those who least expect it, right? So, whilst innocently shopping at TopShop one day, fresh out of six form Courtney, and Alex were spotted by their stylist and songwriter for their swish appearance and unique style, and then teamed up with Karis, who was in Brit School at the time. The girls instantly clicked. The banter we hear laced in their lyrics reflects the fun and mischievous relationship that all three girls share, and although they’ve only been creating fantastic melodic frenzies for about a year, it’s safe to say that these girls are sisters through and through.
With style being at the forefront of their creative expression, twinned with their infectious anthems, Stooshe will do what they want, when they want, and you know what, they can too. The girls are dripping with a ‘can do’ attitude that’s not only endearing, but absolutely inspirational. There’s no wonder why Warner Records jumped at the chance to work with three talented ladies who are the perfect package. With grounded spirit and ambitious nature, Stooshe are definitely positive role models for the younger generation.
Within a space of a year Stooshe have been long listed as part of the BBC Sound of 2012, performed a plethora of gigs, and their debut single ‘Love Me’, which is the radio friendly adaptation of the original ‘Fuck Me’, featured Travis McCoy, the frontman of Gym Class Heroes. With unspoken rules of the music industry ready to be broken and standard genres being bent into Stooshe-shaped creations of pure genius, music is just a massive playground for these three girls who put the fun back into funk. Their debut album is crammed full of promising tracks that have taken the best bits of hip-hop, pop, ska, reggae, r n b, wrapped together with diamond sharp lyrics and harmonies that have the power to swoon the pants off your dancing bum. Swings in Roundabouts will be an anthology of urban hymns and concrete jungle poetry that will narrate the simple stories of everyday life with glimmering twists that will capture your attention, and will resonate around your brain for days and days.

The summer will be an exciting time for Stooshe, and for Stooshe fans too, as they’re penned in to perform at the Isle of White Festival (a sort of homecoming as this was one of their first ever gigs!) and Wired Festival, to only name a couple. Their diaries are left wide open for the summer, so there will be plenty of opportunity for you to catch them perform. Maybe even a house concert up in North Wales? Here’s hoping!
Stooshe will be brightening up the Koko stage in Camden on the 30th, supporting Gym Class Heroes, and HMV’s Next Big Thing in London on February 11th.
A big thank you to Courtney for chatting today, and here’s the Azealia Banks vs Stooshe Mash Up I found on YouTube earlier, as promised. Absolutely bloody incredible!
