The music industry is a fickle mistress, who seems to beckon to the every call of her rich master, turning and twisting into the shape the now big 2 (Warner Bros and Universal) wants, with not much of a protest. The news that EMI is to be bought out and spilt up is just another step towards complete monopolisation, and the fact that Warner has closed their Roadrunner UK/European branch just reaffirms the direction these giants want to lead the music industry as a whole towards. The power = money and money = power relationship is all too familiar to us in this modern day and age, however, its as exciting as magnolia. What interests and inspires me is the other end of the spectrum, where artists, musicians, bands, and writers collectively work together in a glorious society, which is fuelled by passion and creativity and where its members are fighting for originality and the enchantment of art.

These wonderment warriors work all sorts of hours within a variety of industrial sectors, labouring for huge parts of the day in a grey, corporate world in order to fund their love of the arts. Even here at AltSounds we all have other commitments and jobs we toil at, yet the new album sent in by a band who work individual day jobs too, is respite from the monotony. That sharing of art and music affects the soul and keeps the magic alive whilst the power of money and the corporate world is driving us towards a gloomy destination that we would never want to wander towards through free will.
its time to shine some light on the independent side, where all the imaginative ideas are born and boundaries are blurred in order to create new genres within genres
Although the bohemian era has been and gone, its ghosts definitely live amongst us, and its ideologies of freedom, truth, creativity and love still lives on in the busking guitarist, the blogger, the citizen journalist, the pub singer and a whole host of characters who make the independent music industry what it is today. This is a piece to say thank you for all of you who have to work intolerable hours in order to fund sharing your dreams with us, and to the guys who give us the day jobs, and the flexibility to help us realise our ambitions in the creative world. With all the darkness that surrounds the commercial, power and money driven side of the music industry who seems to hog the limelight, its time to shine some light on the independent side, where all the imaginative ideas are born and boundaries are blurred in order to create new genres within genres.

To the waitress and aspiring actress, the singer whos also a teacher, the receptionist whos also a drummer, the admin assistant who raps, the builder who blogs, the nurse who writes poetry, the sales agent who wants to run his own record label, thank you for making the independent music industry absolutely beautiful.
