There was a time where Bob Dylan had a peer. In 1974 Tom Waits had entered the peak of his powers, he hasn’t left it yet, but he has changed exactly what that peak is. ‘New Coat of Paint’ is the opening song on the album The Heart of Saturday Night which many consider to be his finest yet. The laid back blues combined with the optimistic lyrics provide a beautiful juxtaposition that cemented Waits as one of the greatest song-writers of his generation.
The Story
Loosely based around the life of Jack Kerouac, the infamous beat poet, the album is said to look for The Heart of Saturday Night and ‘New Coat of Paint’ starts the album just like the start of any Saturday, optimism and enthusiasm.
Tom Waits said the album was “a comprehensive study of a number of aspects of this search for the center of Saturday night, which Jack Kerouac relentlessly chased from one end of this country to the other, and I've attempted to scoop up a few diamonds of this magic that I see”.
Waits never cornered himself to this jazzy-blues style and has produced vaudeville music, a mixture of country and rock as well as a toe-dipping of hip-hop and grind music, often telling stories of the grotesque. This variance saw Tom Waits inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
