Scream Out Loud are a band from the wonderfully named city of Pensacola in sunny Florida. If you’re looking for the chunky pop-punk hooks of A Day To Remember with the combo of grizzly and clean vocals of Silverstein – then here’s your new favourite band. I threw frontman and lead vocalist Joseph (in the red hat) an array of questions about the band, their influences, and tour life. The dread-locked dude was more than happy to comply; sharing his love for Underoath, ice cream and his fellow bandmates, Hunter (guitar) Keith (drums) and Micah (bass). He seemed like a really genuine guy who above all else just wants to make the world dance and forget about the price tag...

AltSounds: So can you firstly introduce yourselves to the AltSounds readers?
Joseph: My name is Joseph Kirkland, frontman/vocalist of Scream Out Loud. Stoked to answer some questions!

AltSounds: You’re called Scream Out Loud, so you’ve obviously got a lot to get off your chests. What subjects do you tend to write about?
Joseph: Basically life situations. As a band when we write, it's real. Every song that you hear on our album has happened to some of us at one point in time. As a listener and a lyricist, whenever you're in a certain mood or having problems in life, you always wanna find that one song that you can relate too; Something that makes you realize you're not alone.

I feel with our songs a lot people can relate to them because everybody at one point has had their heart broken or has struggled through life trying to find that one thing that makes them happy. I see music not only as something you enjoy but as an escape from real life.

AltSounds: Which bands/musicians have had the most influence on you?
Joseph: That's an extremely difficult question for me. I can't really speak for all the dudes influences but I can name a few of my own. Underoath is definitely a huge influence in what I do. Just the spunk and the drive they would deliver when you watched them perform was just out of this world. Spencer Chamberlain influenced me to become a frontman because the faith this man had as he spilled his heart and soul out on the stage made me understand how to express my love through music. He was the definition of a frontman in my eyes.

AltSounds: You’ve shared the stage with a lot of bands like Four Year Strong, Breathe Carolina and Thursday to name a few. Do you have a particularly memorable show that you can recall?
Joseph: The most memorable show that's always on my mind was in our hometown in this super tiny venue when we shared the stage with Attack! Attack! and Breathe Carolina. It was absolutely nuts; I'm talking three to four hundred people slammed packed shoulder to shoulder from the front to the back. I honestly don't even know how any of us survived considering the lack of oxygen in the room! That was the first time I ever walked away from a show soaked in sweat from my head to my toes.

All in the same night our original bass player asked his beautiful girlfriend to marry him on stage and sadly that was his last show, he left on good terms. What an amazing way to go out, playing in front of an incredible amount of people; A night that him and ourselves would never forget.
I believe we inspire each other. Because whenever we fall we pick each other back up.
AltSounds: Do you have any survival tips for when you’re out on tour?
Joseph: DON'T GET SICK. Do everything in your power to stay well. Because it's no fun being sick on the road especially if you're a vocalist considering your throat is your instrument. Whatever money you have conserve it only use it if you really have to. Ramen noodles is your best friend. Last but not least don't ever approach a squirrel and try to hand feed it. They might seem cute and cuddly but that's just a cover up. They're sneaky and they will bite the crap out of you. Take it from me.

AltSounds: We'll remember that! Congrats on your cover of Jessie J’s 'Price Tag' – it’s racked up thousands of YouTube hits. What inspired you to cover that song in particular?
Joseph: Why thank you! We are super pleased with the feedback we've received from the cover and we're very glad that everyone who has listened enjoys it. The reason we chose that song was because of how inspirational and positive the words are. What I got from the song is that even though money is a huge source for living life, it's not the main focus; That everyone is so blinded with dollar signs in their eyes that they don't ever stop to enjoy life as it is. So from the mouth of Jessie J "It's not about the money".

AltSounds: Do you have an “album that changed your life”?
Joseph: They're Only Chasing Safety by Underoath. It changed everything for me. That is definitely my album.

AltSounds: Nice choice. You’ve recently released a music video for your brilliantly catchy track 'Live It Up'. But if you had an endless budget for a video shoot, what would you do?

Joseph: I think we would probably do something like The Lonely Island's song 'Japan' describes. The lyrics are "We've never been to Japan, so we wrote a song about the three of us in Japan, and our label has to pay for it." So it's like a "We're doing this because we can" type of thing. Haha. We would kind of just go all out with it. I'm really not sure what theme we would choose, but it would have a lot going on. That's for sure. It would be a good time and entertaining for all.

AltSounds: Aside from music, what else inspires you as a band?
Joseph: I believe we inspire each other. Because whenever we fall we pick each other back up.

AltSounds: Aww, how very philosophical. So do you have an album available yet? And if so, how would you describe it?
Joseph: Yes we do. We released our debut album Live it Up on January 31st 2012 through Indianola Records. Its available in select HotTopics, Best Buys, and FYE's throughout the USA. I think that with this album, we have a little bit of everything for everyone. A softer side for those who love to sing along and a heavier side those who enjoy their share of screaming. If you're a fan of Silverstein I believe you will enjoy what we have to offer.

Live It Up

AltSounds: Will any UK fans have the chance to see you perform over here soon?
Joseph: I really hope so. We would love to visit the UK. It would be an honor and a thrill to come play for you guys. Hang in there, we're doing our best to get there as fast as we can! Could AltSounds maybe sponsor an overseas tour??? Haha.

AltSounds: We wish! How about if you could pick three headliners for your dream festival line-up, who would you choose?
Joseph: Taking Back Sunday, Underoath and Silverstein.

AltSounds: I’ve heard that you all really like ice cream...So what is the ultimate ice cream flavour?
Joseph: I believe that was my doing. I mean I'm sure some of the guys love ice cream. But they definitely don't love it as much as I do. And flavors? We love all kinds!

AltSounds: Ok, time for the Quickfire round!

AltSounds: Vampires or werewolves?
Joseph: Vampires.

AltSounds: McDonalds or KFC?

Joseph:
McDonalds cause their chicken sandwiches are amazing and cheap and it's good tour food. But any other day KFC.

AltSounds: Jonny Craig or Craig Owens? (frontmen for D.R.U.G.S and Dance Gavin Dance respectively)
Joseph: Craig Owens.

AltSounds: The Simpsons or Family Guy?
Joseph: The Simpsons all the way.
