Many artists criticise the punk bands that write an album’s worth of songs with three chords, why is it you think Green Day felt they had to switch it up and produce the masterpiece that is American Idiot? But sometimes three chords can be a wonder, when it’s done well, and Eels play D, C, G better than anybody else. Vocally, the laid back dulcet tone of Mark Oliver Everett matches the narrative of the song, despite singing the bonkers lyrics in such a straight-faced fashion. ‘I Like Birds’ is a beautiful track and once you get past the humorous lyrics there is an element of genius to it. Go sit on a porch in the sun with a glass of Pimms, relax and listen.

The Story

‘I Like Birds’ was an album track on Daisies of the Galaxy released in 2000 with moderate success. The main single from the album ‘Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues’ reached #11 in the UK.

The song is reportedly about a book of birds that Everett’s, more commonly known as E, mother owned.

The album developed interest and intrigue from various areas of society. In politics an advisor to George W. Bush said the album was an example of obscenity-laden entertainment marketed toward children, with reference to the song ‘It’s a Motherfucker’.
