I was only introduced to Gil Scott-Heron on his last ever album release before his death, and first in 16 years, I'm New Here. Or at least that's what I had thought, Gil's iconic poetry and wordsmithery has, in fact, popped up on several albums that have become staples of my musical diet that I didn't realize were Gil Scott-Heron until I familiarized myself more with his work.
My first choice today is "Your Soul and Mine" which is taken off I'm New Here and is a great introductory track to the world of Gil Scott-Heron if you are unfamiliar.
Next up is "Islands" by The XX and, whilst it is not my favorite song on their self titled debut album it is an awesome video. The way The XX have managed to showcase all that repetition visually is amazing and really hooks you in to the world of The XX. You're probably asking how the hell I got from Gil Scott-Heron to The XX right?! Well Jamie Smith of The XX did a complete remix of Gil Scott-Heron's album of I'm New Here cleverly titled We're New Here which was also released shortly before Gil Scott Heron's death on May 27th 2011. As good, if not potentially better than I'm New Here, We're New Here added the Jamie xx edge to everything and slightly modernized the already modern sounding last ever album from Gil Scott Heron.
The final choice is the mightily awesome Gorillaz and their live cover of a song by The XX, "Crystalised". For me, sometimes you only realize how awesome a song is when you hear how good it is performed by someone else and Gorillaz covering "Crystalised" is no different! Much like the comments on the Youtube page, for some reason I can't stop watching this and I can't for the life of me quite understand why.
And that is it for this week's Triple Threat Tuesday. Until next week where we will have another three awesome bite sized chunks of quality music for you to devour!
