With an unusually long intro of 1½ minutes and a Vanilla Ice quality dance routine, ‘Push It’ really should flopped but thanks to the slick rapping of Cheryl James, Sandra Denton and Deidra Roper, not to mention the sexiness, it was a huge success for Salt-N-Pepa, not to mention a song that kickstarted a relatively long career.
The Story
Following the group’s early beef with Doug E. Fresh, Super Nature introduced Deidra Roper as their new DJ and changed their name to Salt-N-Pepa on the album Hot, Cool & Vicious.
This album spawned the single ‘Tramp’ which had relative success, but it was when Cameron Paul’s remix of the song’s B-Side, ‘Push It’ which reached #9 in the US and #2 in the UK a year later.
The girls kept up their success for nearly a decade and inspired a number of female rap artists over five albums including the monster hits ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ and ‘Whatta Man’.
