No one has consistently written great music over a career as long as Prince. Although he’s immediately associated with the 80s genius of ‘Purple Rain’ and 90s reign of Symbol, he has continued this success with the funkiest song of this millennium, ‘Musicology’. Taken off the album of the same name Prince piles more genres, layers and styles in to this celebration of black music. Although Prince has never been a man of many words, his music speaks for him and ‘Musicology says a lot.
The Story
Prince wanted to make the album Musicology to educate people who had never heard any of his previous work. In some songs you can hear references to, or samples of ‘Little Red Corvette’ and ‘Purple Rain’.
The title-track song was meant to be an ode to James Brown who made famous the funky style ‘Musicology’ is associated with.
The song performed on the charts as well as any other Prince record does. It reached only #125 in the US Singles chart and didn’t register in the UK, but his music is constantly influential and is appreciated more by musicians than the general public.
