In 2007, a dork in some silly sunglasses and his big brother’s t-shirt created the biggest dance craze since the Macarena, the only problem is nobody knew how to actually do it. Soulja Boy Tell’em put together a beat with some steel drums over the top and put together a video combining all the individual dance sections that had been circling the internet for the previous couple of weeks.
‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’ isn’t the most complex song lyrically and Soulja Boy Tell’em never really had a second major hit to show off any flow he may or may not have had but every time the song comes on in the club, everybody starts tapping their feet and pretending to fly like superman.
The Story
It’s reported that ‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’ was entirely composed from a basic beats package on DeAndre Cortez Way’s computer.
The song was nominated for the ‘Best Rap Song’ Grammy but lost out to Kanye West’s ‘Good Life’.
It charted in 10 countries but Soulja Boy Tell’em never achieved the same success, although ‘Kiss Me Thru The Phone’ did reach #1 in the US Rap Charts.
