It's that time again. Friday. The weekend starts here! Also the 2012 Olympic Games start here too, love them or loathe them, they are here so deal with it! The games are a massive spotlight on our nation and we should embrace this attention wholeheartedly in my opinion. Let's show the world we can pull it all off without showing what a grumbling, moaning little out crop of rock we really are!
All that said, we have a problem. Quite a big musical one. The Olympic 'powers that be' have organised an opening ceremony concert in the Hyde Park Arena for the beginning of the games later today. This big spotlight gig, (and remember the whole world is watching here) is to be headlined by none other than Duran Duran (ENG), Paolo Nutini (SCOT), Stereophonics (WALES) and Snow Patrol (N.I.), to showcase the talent from the four corners of the United Kingdom of Great Britian.
SERIOUSLY?

[This is the best we can do is it? Honestly?!]
We have the whole world watching and our best musical talent is some dodgy 80's Uncles and mediocre rock?
No we can so much better, and today AltSounds is giving you just a little taster of our fair nation. Remember this is just a very small taster, yes there are oodles of bands worthy of this article in the Britain right now, we can't fit them ALL in, but you are more than welcome to comment below with your four suggestions.
First up (and in no particular order it must be said) representing England, we have South London boys The Maccabees. Three albums in and these guys just keep getting bigger and better, so from their third release from early this year Given To The Wild we have the blinding 'Pelican'.
Representing the UK // The Maccabees
Representing Scotland we have Edinburgh's We Were Promised Jetpacks. Two albums in and formed in 2003, these boys from Auld Reekie show no signs of stopping. Let's have what by rights should be a contemporary classic, their first single release from 2009 'Quiet Little Voices'.
Representing Scotland // We Were Promised Jetpacks
Next up we have AltSounds's beloved Wales. There are absolutely bag loads of Welsh artists that could be chosen, but, for me it has to be the amazing North Welsh trio of Ritzy, Rhydian and Matt aka The Joy Formidable. A band so loud when live on stage it has to been seen and heard to be believed, constantly on the worldwide gig circuit, can't them before global stardom steals them away into massive stadiums. From their debut album A Big Roar I give you 'A Heavy Abacus'
Representing Wales // The Joy Formidable
Last but certainly not least we have Northern Ireland's soon to be rock monsters A Plastic Rose. This young Belfast/Sligo quartet play loud, melodic Alt-Rock with tinges of post hardcore thrown in, and coupled with the personalities of the 'born to be famous' type it all makes for great listening and big times ahead. Lets have a listen to their new single 'Boy Racer' shall we.
Representing Northern Island // A Plastic Rose
So that's your lot from me today. No doubt you are sat there shouting about which bands should be in here so let your fingers do the talking.
Happy Friday from the real United Kingdom!
