Perhaps it was ironic because Steven Tyler looks like a lady in certain lights, but ‘Dude (Looks Like A Lady)’ was a genius musical production. The all-American guitar solo of Joe Perry is the icing on the cake of a song written by himself and the lead singer.
The dramatic change in the middle-eight added another unforced melody in to the rocking classic but it is the horns and the vocalist playing off each other in the chorus that makes this song such an addictive listen.
The Story
Written by Steven Tyler, Desmond Child and Joe Perry, their band Aerosmith released the song in 1987 to reach #45 in the UK album charts.
‘Dude (Looks Like A Lady)’ was re-released in 1990 to perform better than the first time it was heard, off the album Permenant Vacation. It’s use in the film Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993 helped secure its longevity.
It is said the song started out as ‘Cruisin’ for a Lady’ but after spending time with the band Motley Crüe, Tyler changed the lyric.
