Welcome to the first edition of The 3 Round Roundup, AltSounds’ weekly roundup of the best videos from the world of battle rap. I know it’s not technically music, with the majority of battles these days being acappella, but it all stems from the world of hip-hop, plus many of the battlers release their own music, so I feel it has a place on AltSounds.

The world of battle rap has grown immensely in the last few years, with videos attracting hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, big cash prizes being handed out and major label artists such as Canibus, Drake and Raekwon (Wu-Tang) either battling or co-hosting, and many others giving it their stamp of approval.

Each week I’ll be selecting my 3 favourite battles from various battle leagues from across the world including Don’t Flop (UK), King of the Dot (Canada), Smack-URL (USA), Got Beef? (Australia), Basementality (Sweden) and more.

So let’s go! (WARNING: Some may find the following material offensive.)

WATCH // Batman Vs The Joker (Don’t Flop)

The first battle I’ve picked was uploaded on 20 July. Although it actually took place at Don’t Flop’s April Fools event, the release was delayed to coincide with the release of The Dark Knight Rises. Each April, Don’t Flop throw an event at which they try weird and wonderful battle concepts and this year was no exception. As well as featuring the first 1-on-1-on-1 battle (Suus vs Bowski vs Evileyz), in Batman Vs Joker they had the first ever ‘character battle’.

Featuring Pamflit (the flamboyant body builder known for his multi-syllabic freestyling abilities and his trademark ‘I’m rapping it darker’ set-up) as The Joker, and Deffinition as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Deffinition is no stranger to innovation. At last year’s April Fools event he battled himself in a mirror, and at King Of The Dot’s World Domination 2 he battled Tricky P in the first ever compliments battle.

Here the pair do battle in full costume and in character in a battle that is already on its way to becoming a classic. Full of hilarious punch lines referencing the movies and comics, in less than a week it’s already received over 100,000 views. Enjoy.

WATCH // The Saurus vs Cruger (King Of The Dot)

This battle took place at King Of The Dot’s now infamous Vendetta showcase which featured as its main event Canibus vs Dizaster, the battle which will go down in history as having THE worst choke of all time (read about it here).

Although the Bis vs Diz battle attracted the most attention, the event hosted a plethora of top-notch battles, including this one featuring the legendary veteran and ‘2 time champion of everything’ The Saurus and Don’t Flop co-founder Cruger.

King Of The Dot is becoming one of the most respected battle leagues in the world, with high definition 1080p videos and in-depth before and after interviews, not to mention the sheer caliber of the battlers they pitch against each other. The Saurus vs Cruger is no exeption. I’m not going to go into too much detail here as the pre-match interviews say it all.

The Saurus' debut album All I Know Is That can be downloaded at thesauruswins.bandcamp.com.

WATCH // The Saurus & Illmaculate vs Henry Bowers & Oshea

Here’s another battle featuring The Saurus, this time in a 2-on-2 with his partner Illmaculate at the Swedish league O-Zone’s two year anniversary. The legendary pair are 2-time world rap champions and are one of the most formidable tag teams the world of battle rap has ever seen, however their opponents give them a run for their money in this hilarious battle.

O’shea is Don’t Flop’s current champion having beaten Sensa at January’s To The Test 10 event. The scouser has a reputation for being one of the funniest battlers around (if at time the most inebriated). His partner, the mighty bearded Henry Bowers is one of the most highly regarded Swedish battlers, making easy work of his opponents be it in his native tongue or in English.

This is a high spirited 2-on-2 full of clever word play, quick witted flips, haymaking punchlines and belly laughs from both sides.

Illmaculate's latest album Skrill Talk can be downloaded at illmaculate.bandcamp.com/album/illmaculate-skrill-talk.

Other honorable mentions released this week but didn’t quite make the cut are Micky Worthless vs Mark Grist (Don’t Flop) and Jay Legend vs Dizaster (Got Beef?)

If you have any comments about the battles, or if you find any that you think are worth featuring in next week’s 3 Round Roundup hit me up on twitter at @ajrobertshaw.
