The past few days, I’ve been getting particularly excited about Reading & Leeds Festival, one of the greater British music festivals that prides itself on the assortment of diverse and varied artists the busy organisers manage to assemble each year. (Pay close attention, AltSounds will be reviewing the whole weekend as soon as it’s all over!)
Standing tall and proud with one triumphantfoot upon the top of the bill is the magnificent Foo Fighters, who have constituted a large majority of the music I’ve been listening to recently. Dave & Co. just do such an effective job of getting you up off your cumbersome arse and jumping about like a ten year old dizzy on lemonade and ritalin. The sounds they make you feel good in your brain.
Let’s start the week with a hit of Foo. Ordinarily, we like to explore the one song to get your Monday off to a brisk, bouncy start, but this week I’ve thrown in four great tracks courtesy of the Seattle rockers, each with enough energy and vigour to set you up until we meet again next Monday. That’s right. Four. That’s like, twenty whole minutes of music. Don’t say we don’t treat you right.
First up, ‘DOA’ from the In Your Honour album of 2005.
Hope you enjoyed that. Next we’re taking a visit to the huge, Zeppelin-esque smash hit ‘The Pretender’ taken from possibly the best Foo Fighters effort to date, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. Only 55 million views on this one.
A quick trip back to the earlier days of Grohl with the visceral, buzzing performance of ‘Monkey Wrench’ back in 1997. One of the group’s best videos to date. If this one doesn’t get you pumped up for the daily grind, I’m not sure what else will.
And finally, the conclusive leg of our trip through FooLand; the present day – a live performance of ‘Arlandria’, from the Foo Fighters’ latest album Wasting Light.
“Fame, fame, go away” – perhaps Grohl’s social commentary is focusing itself upon the unnatural pressures and demands of our contemporary celebrity culture? Who knows – all I’m aware of is that this song fucking rocks.
See you next week!
