If Kanye West, the maker of such films like ‘Touch the Sky’ and ‘Heartless’ proclaims Beyonce had “one of the best videos of all time”, then who are we to disagree? ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)’ was so simple it was infuriating to those who over thought every music video before it. It wasn’t just the video; every girl in every club displayed their ring finger on the chorus’ single lyric.

The reason the line worked at all was thanks to the straight heavy beat that carried the song, unchanged until the middle-eight, which morphed in to another musical paradox of R’n’B genius. The energy that exudes from the track empowers women everywhere, not just from the lyrics but Beyonce’s trademark growling soul vocal.

The Story

The inspiration for ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)’ is said to have developed from her secret marriage to Jay-Z in 2008, and a typical man’s unwillingness to commit.

The song encapsulates the fierce aggressive alter ego Sasha Fierce, who the album is titled after I Am… Sasha Fierce apparently inspired by Etta James when Beyonce portrayed her in the movie Cadillac Records.

‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)’
stormed to #1 in the US and reached top #20 in several other countries. The album I Am… Sasha Fiercehad much the same success, if not more.
