Woohoo, it’s Friday! And with everyone seeking adrenaline fuelled crashing songs that will lead the way to a weekend full of fun and frolics, I thought I’d start the day with a an appropriate paced track, as opposed to go steaming right in and then losing momentum by lunchtime.
The Cure’s ‘A Forest’ is one of papa Davies’ favourites, so it’s already got his seal of approval, which means it’s definitely worthy of the Tune of the (yester)Day accolade. The eerie atmospheric blend of echoing vocals narrating a haunting tale of seeing a ghostly outline of a girl, only to discover it’s a figment of your imagination. The track portrays wonderfully the longing for something that’s not there, and the chilling power that surrounds desire.
Try driving in the dead of the night, with no traffic and this track blaring through your speakers, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a late night journey, adding a little mysticism to it.
Also, The Cure are playing in Reading and Leeds this weekend, so you lucky peepers going over there, you get the chance to share some Cure moments that will no doubt stay with you forever! Lucky!
The Story
‘A Forest’ was released back in 1980, on the 28th of Match to be exact. It was the only single to be released from their second album Seventeen Seconds. The track was the first single that charted for The Cure, reaching number 31 in the UK and 26 in the Netherlands. This track was also responsible for the band’s first appearance on Top of the Pops.
Former drummer of The Cure, Andy Anderson, said ‘A Forest’ was the first song by the band he’d heard, and he “fell in love with it” along with the song’s vocals, Robert Smith’s guitar work and the “haunting” keyboards. His addition, the drums, was “all it needed” according to Anderson.
Although ‘A Forest’ isn’t one of The Cure’s biggest hits, critics and fans both agree that it conveys that quintessential Cure sound.
