The 15th instalment of our One Hit Wonder Wednesday feature comes from someone you’ve probably forgotten all about.
Truth hurts is best known for her 2002 hit single ‘Addictive’ featuring hip hop legend Rakim. To this day ‘Addictive’ is her only song to have charted inside the Billboard Hot 100 where it reached number 9. It peaked at number three in the UK top 40 and also reached the top 5 in Switzerland France. The song samples 'Thoda Resham Lagta Hai', a song recorded in 1981 by Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, which Truth Hurts' record label Aftermath failed to clear the rights to. This resulted in a $500 million dollar lawsuit being filed by its copyright holders against aftermath as well as an injunction being filed to stop any further performances and broadcasts of the song.
The success of 'Addictive' led to Truth Hurts real name, Shari Watson, touring with Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu in 2002 but the buzz soon faded. Her album 'Truthfully Speaking' saw little success ,possibly due in part to the aforementioned lawsuit. Not much was heard from after that apart from the occasional guest vocal on songs by other artists.
She returned in 2004 with her second album ‘Ready Now’ which was executive produced by Raphael Saadiq and was released independently by his label Pookie entertainment. The album peaked at 173 on the billboard album charts and failed to produce any major hit singles.
Truth Hurts is working on new material, only time can tell if she’ll ever have another hit again but for now enjoy ‘Addictive.’
