David Gray’s soft voice was only juxtaposed by the power of his lyrics. Even the guitar melodies and half brush drumming in ‘Babylon’ made you feel like you were floating. You never could tell if Gray’s head bobbing throughout the song was in time with the beat or spawned from an internal groove.

‘Babylon’ is a simple tune made up of a handful of chords, and with few additional instruments on this US release, the integrity and delicacy of the song isn’t compromised.

The Story:
No song by David Gray has performed better than ‘Babylon’, originally released in 1999 and re-issued in 2000. The song featured on his fourth studio album White Ladder.

Prior to White Ladder, the singer-songwriter Gray failed to achieve commercial success, although he did garner attention within contemporary folk circles with his first two albums A Century Ends and Flesh. His third album Sell, Sell, Sell sold marginally better but failed to chart.

Dave Matthews
from Dave Matthews Band covered the song and released David Gray’s version as a debut record on his own record company ATO Records.
