Our 20th One Hit Wonder Wednesday comes to you courtesy of Toni Basil with her 1982 hit "Mickey."
The song was originally written as "Kitty" by songwriters Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn and recorded in 1979. It was changed to "Mickey" in order to sing it about a man. "Mickey" reached number one in the US billboard charts and number 2 in the UK. The cheerleading themed video was a big hit on MTV and also ranked at number one on VH1's countdown of the 100 greatest one hit wonders of all time. "Mickey" was also number one in Canada and Australia howeverwas never able to recreate or match the success of "Mickey."
Toni Basil's next single "Nobody" failed to set the charts alight, reaching number 52 in the UK which stalled the success of her debut album Word of Mouth. An eponymous second album was released in 1983 but saw little success thus ending Toni Basil's music career.
"Mickey" has been covered countless times in the years since its release, Lolly released a version in 1990 and managed to score a top ten hit. Irish girl group B*Witched also recorded a version that was used in the popular cheerleading film Bring It On starring Kirsten Dunst.
Toni Basil, born Antonia Basilotta found more success as an actress, director and choreographer and continues to work in these areas today.
