I am a sucker for 80’s power ballads, and if you throw in a good sax solo, then I’m just hooked forever. No questions asked. Also, I absolutely love tunes that my parents loved when they were current too. When I saw the new John Lewis advert (yes, Christmas is on its way, it’s official now), Mum instantly piped up saying “oh, your dad loved this song”, even though it was the might Paloma Faith singing and not the incredible original version by INXS. I knew what she meant.
The dramatic orchestral strings encompassed by 80’s synths, infused with dramatic pauses, romantic vocals and galvanising drums, that makes this an incredible rock ballad full of nostalgia and a universal love story. Oh and that sax solo. Such an iconic 80’s sound, yet adds an extra, dense layer of sensual romance to the sweeping ballad.
Not often is a cover better than the original, and in this instance, the original is better, by quite a margin.
The Story
‘Never Tear Us Apart’ is said to be created after a demo was passed to INXS singer Michael Hutchence, who penned this love song, which came straight from the heart.
The song was originally written as a bluesy number in the style of Fats Domino, but producer Chris Thomas decided that exchanging the piano for synths was the way forward.
The single reached number 27 in the UK charts and stayed there for 7 weeks. In the US it reached number 7 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100.
After his death in 1997, Michael Hutchence's coffin was carried out of St. Andrews Cathedral by the remaining members of INXS and younger brother Rhett, as 'Never Tear Us Apart' was played in the background. This song is now thought of by many original INXS fans as Hutchence's anthem.
