DJ Excel

By: Fridae Mattas

DJ Excel is the hottest spinster on the east coast today, Excel is from Baltimore hoping to conquer the world, he had this to say.

Fridae: Kick this off by introducing yourself to the world.

DJ EXCEL: What’s up world? This is that Bmore representative DJ Excel

Fridae: DJ’s are a dime a dozen what do you bring to the table that makes you different from your competition?

DJ EXCEL: I don’t have competition outside because I am fueled by the competition I have within myself. I record and tweak emotions. There is a subliminal line that critical thinkers operate on and that is the world in which I create music. I hear you on DJ’s are a dime a dozen but real dj’s that can mix, scratch, create beats or sound schemes with simple sounds.

Fridae: I hear that you are also an MC and producer if you could elaborate please.

DJ EXCEL: Well I got into hip hop back when one station on AM radio took a chance with the music. Herbie Hancock was rockin it….But ever since then I had a chose this way to communicate. As far as being a Mc I just think I can spit. I do not go at it as hard as I do production. As far as production if I cannot find an artist to capture the full image on a song or concept that is when I just go ahead and finish the song by writing to it. The emotion in a song is what people are magnetically pulled to before they are like yeah or nay. Feel me.

Fridae: Who has inspired you to become a DJ?

DJ EXCEL: Hands down Prince Paul …Potholes did it for me I wanted to dj, make beats, and scratch 24 hours a day. On the local side there was a kid named DJ Koolbreez who lived a block away from me. He had equipment and that was the first time I ever saw a dj setup in person. I try to scratch Stezo and I was hooked…

Fridae: What type of music do you spin?

DJ EXCEL: I love old school hiphop. There is nothing like that music in the world. I also spin Baltimore club music. I put out a record with Unruly Records in 95 called “This DJ”. So I always start off or follow in with my joint. It is the greatest feeling to hear your songs in the mix…

Fridae: How long have you been mastering your craft?

DJ EXCEL: Since 1990 I would say. But I got into the mortgage business for about 7 years and did music production on the side. There wasn’t a big hip hop scene in Bmore at the time and I knew I could not make six figures off djing back then so I went into the mortgage field.

Fridae: Do you have any compilations out there that the public could hear?

DJ EXCEL: Dj Excel’s “Live from Yesterday”, which is a 60 track cd of old school heaven. Real mix cd the way it was supposed to be done.

Dj Excel’s- “The Underground Files” exclusive remixes, freestyles on artists from Triune (California) The Lyricists (Boston) Dez N Nobs- (New York) Perceptionists remix of “let’s Move”, and so many more acts from the underground grinding big with all my original productions and jammed packed with blends & scratches.

Dj Excel’s “Friday Nite Bounce” which is my club album is due back from mastering any day now. This is going to be hot for all the club heads worldwide.

I post joints on my space page all the time so that’s a good place to see what when & where…MySpace.com - BMORE CLUB BY DJ EXCEL - Baltimore to your hood - WORLDWIDE - Hip Hop / Club / Chinese traditional - www.myspace.com/djexcel1 for hip hop….www.myspace.comdjexcelclubtrax xx for Baltimore Club music.

I have upcoming productions with the following cats:
Emajor- Majority Rules…I have four tracks on here
Days Dirges- I am basically producing his whole album except 2 tracks.
Arcane- I have a couple joints on the new album
Capital X- National Anthem 07’- One joint on his album
MD 20/20_ I did a 6 track ep with them that is due out in late fall 06.

Fridae: Who would you choose to work with if you had the opportunity?

DJ EXCEL: Prince Paul and Easy Mo Bee hands down….On he mc tip it would be ….Meth…Mc Serch… Murs

Fridae: Are you a resident Disc Jockey anywhere or do you prefer to headline bouncing from gig to gig?

DJ EXCEL: Well I do both at the moment. I dj ,on the road, for ARCANE. These guys really grind 4 Warp Tours, Overseas tour…always on the grind I tell ya. Right now we are recording the new album so we kind of pick and choose the venues. We got a hot show with Cypress Hill on Halloween at the arena should be hot….I also dj on the local scene at Sonar’s which is Baltimore biggest nightclub.

Fridae: What advice do you have for aspiring DJ’s?

DJ EXCEL: Listen to Jazzy Jeff’s Live from Union Square!!! That record alone taught me how to transform.

Fridae: Where would you like to spin that you have not already?

DJ EXCEL: I would like to do Europe on an exclusive Excel tour.

Fridae: What are your favorite clubs?

DJ EXCEL: The ones that pay the most…nah…..umm Clubs come and go……I do not have a fav.

Fridae: Who is your favorite DJ?

DJ EXCEL: I got to say I got mad respect for DJ Scratch from EPMD; I also got mad respect for my man DJ Impulse.

Fridae: Do you work with CD’s or vinyl?

DJ EXCEL: I use both. I am real nasty scratching on my cdj……lol……2 turntables and one cdj….

Fridae: What do you want people to know? This is your chance to plug anything.

DJ EXCEL: Check out www.undersoundmusic.net.
Cop the mix joints and cats that are beat shopping hit me up. I have an arsenal of different style of production. From themes for scores and commercials to whole LPs already formulated.
