Audio-Technica ATH-M35 closed back studio headphones created especially for field recording and studio tracking/mixing.
Audio Technica are back again and this time they have their eyes fixed firmly on the person that you see walking down the street with big cans on. The type of person that will not care how they look instead opting for premium sound quality that in your ear headphones just cannot give. I am one f those people, so I was pleasantly surprised with the new Audio Technica ATH-M35 Stereo Headphones. But don't let that fool you into thinking these are only listening headphones. Far from it. Their sonical capabilities and amazing folding design make them an awesome choice for all studios and sound technicians too and with superior audio quality you can be confident in uing them for all applications.
In The Box
The ATH-M35 Stereo Headphones come packaged in plastic packagining and includes a nice carrying case and 1/8" to 1/4@" adapter so instantly these headphones can be used in EVERY piece of equipment that requires headphones. So as you could imagine setup was a fairly simplistic task it was literally plug and play. One thing worthy of noting here is that the 1/8" to 1/4" adapter is a nice screwable one which works great for studio applications because with the normal adapters I can't count how many times a singer has pulled too hard on their cans only to find the 1/8" end of the cable spiralling towards them! Also it's worth noting here that the headphone cable is probably too short. Sure you probably have six feet of cable but for proper studio applications I would suggest all headphone manufacturers double that and provide 12-20 feet of cable length, you would be surprised how many purcases you would see.
On Your Head
So putting the ATH-M35 Stereo Headphones around my neck they feel comfortable and the ear pieces are nicely padded and the extendable arms are extendable enough to fit even the biggest of heads, even the guy from the TV show Reaper would be able to rock the ATH-M35 Stereo Headphones! There is also nice padding on the head bridge making these guys really comfortable when being worn.
The headphone spill is quite nominal but it is far from amazing, the worst culprits being the bass frequencies but on the filpside you know what that means?! Yes that's right folks, these speakers have a delicious bass range comfortably picking up certain sub frequencies. So how does the rest sound? Well overall really great. There is however some colourization of the sound particularly in the mid frequencies but within seconds of putting the cans on and letting your ears adjust this will be your new sound anyway. However, this makes mixing on these a little tricky but once you get used to it's colourization they are actually great and can help you get a nicer sounding mid range section in your mix as long as you know to push it that little bi to compensate for this colurization.
I threw all kinds of music at this from classical all the way to Death Metal just to see how it coped and it stood up amazingly. These headphones would be AMAZING music listening headphones, would also make great DJ headphones, are great for use as headphones in the studio and at a push could be used to mix on. A pretty diverse beast I am sure you agree?
