Are you bored with all the typical popular music sample packs on the market? Are you perhaps stuck for inspiration and are looking for something different? Or maybe you are a fan of Eastern music and are looking for a sample pack that steps outside the box. If so then look no further because EarthMoments, (who are a division of EarthSync), are a company with a free spirit who produce samples with unique instruments and sounds of the world.

For all producers, composers and music lovers who enjoy and appreciate classical music I would seriously recommend Oriental Orchestra. This doesn’t happen very often, mainly because I am used to pop, R’n’B, dubstep and dance sample packs, but whilst listening to the samples in Oriental Orchestra I genuinely felt moved by the music. This is not to say that popular music sample packs do not move me, it is just vary rare. There are some exquisitely smooth and gentle strings samples playing soothing harmonies that, as soon as I started listening, I was entranced.

What I love about Oriental Orchestra is that all the strings are played live with only a metronome to keep them in time, there are no digital inputs or other instruments to help the musicians, and the time keeping is spot on. There are quartet, octet and ensemble string sections, a western orchestra but playing in the style of Eastern music. The richness in the music, inspired by Indian, Turkish and Far Eastern cultures, oozes through these samples.

The organic acoustic sounds of the instruments are captured so well, with the help of warm Neve and SSL preamps and Neumann vintage tube mics. Oriental Orchestra contains 202 samples which are labelled by key and tempo, these tempos ranging from 60bpm to 124bpm.

Distant Rhythms, a completely different pack to Oriental Orchestra, is described by EarthMoments as, ‘percussions, strings, woodwinds and vocals in one of the best experiences.’ These Indian influenced samples are categorised by the instrument, the nine folders are; Bhapang, Bass Dholak, Ghatam, Kanjira, Khol, Morsing (and double Morsing), Mridangam, Naqqara and Tabla. If you, like me in my ignorance, do not have a clue what half of these instruments are, EarthMoments have kindly included a description to help.

Bass Dholak - 38 samples
Bass Dholak is a large wooden barrel shaped drum associated with the folk music of Punjab. The drum is hung around the neck and the bass and treble heads on either side are struck using sticks.

Ghatam - 38 samples
A large clay pot used in South Indian Carnatic music. When struck, the sound is of the outside ringing of the pot, and a low resonance inside the cavity. The pitch of can be raised or lowered by opening or closing the mouth of the pot against the stomach.

Kanjira - 41 samples
Like a small tambourine, Kanjira is used in South Indian Classical music. The instrument is about seven inches in diameter, made of lizard skin stretched over one side of a circular wooden frame, which has a few metal jingles mounted in a single slit.

Tabla - 58 samples
A rhythm accompaniment for North Indian Hindustani Classical music, the pair of drums is played with fingers and wrists of both hands to create a wide range of different pitches and tones.

Khol - 49 samples
A drum from northeast India used as accompaniment for devotional songs. The barrel of the drum is terracotta. The two heads of the drum are dissimilar, one being about 4 inches wide and the other about 10 inches.

Morsing - 104 samples
Used in both Carnatic and folk music, India’s version of the Jew’s harp is a circular metal frame with two prongs and a spring tongue between the prongs. Holding the prongs between the teeth and striking the spring tongue, sound variations and overtones are achieved by mouth and breathing techniques.

Mridangam - 52 samples
A rhythmic accompaniment in Carnatic music, it is a doubled-sided drum made of jack wood. The treble head of the drum has a permanent application of ferric oxide at its center to give it the characteristic metallic timbre.

Naqqara - 30 samples
A pair of kettle drums used traditionally in the Naubat ensemble of North India, The drums are placed on the floor during performance and played with sticks held in both hands. It usually accompanies the Shehnai.

Bhapang - 33 Samples
Accompanying vocal performances, this rhythm-creating folk instrument is a hollow shell of dry pumpkin and goatskin. A string is fixed at the center of the skin, which is stretched and relaxed by the fingers to produce sound variations.

The samples are played by top Indian percussionists, recorded particularly well and with such unusual and distinctive instruments, this sample pack is music to my ears. The sound of the Morsing is fantastic and is what I can only describe as a mix between an aboriginal Australian sound and a comedy ‘boing’ sound effect. Another sample from this pack that stood out for me is the Tabla, which has some really funky rhythms and a raw acoustic tone. With such a range of extraordinary and atypical sounds to the general Western world, Distant Rhythms is a fresh and original sample pack. The samples are in a range of tempos and there are over 440 to experiment with.

With such unusual and diverse sounds these samples would also be brilliant for use in TV, film and other projects. As EarthSync point out themselves,
‘’our passion for cultures, music, sound and excellence often goes beyond the studio to little known lands and their music. We bring these unknown sounds, instruments and music to the international platform through albums, documentary films, live shows, collaborative projects, and unique platforms for music production.’’
As boasted by EarthSync, and rightly so, with their team of experienced producers, engineers and internationally acclaimed musicians, you can certainly see how these samples have brought together traditional and contemporary sounds and created two unique and diverse sample packs.
