HTC. The phone company that prides itself on being “quietly brilliant” has released its new basic smartphone: the HTC Desire C. Building phones that are designed for their owners since 1997, can the HTC Desire C step up and prove to meet its holders basic needs?
The 3.5” touch screen means that the smartphone is compact whilst keeping a high quality display. Its sleek graphics follow the same design as other HTC smartphones, keeping the ring pull login, up to date weather (which has window wipers when raining), and key features including calls and text messaging. Unfortunately, texting with a qwerty keyboard on a screen of such size can be a problem, but it seems that HTC have a solution. The phone settings can be changed to a 123 keypad, or its new calibration technology captures the size of your fingers and recognises which letter you are touching!
So what else makes this phone different from its predecessors?
Exclusively equipped with beats audio ensures for the highest sound quality, with or without headphones to match. When using the phones music player on speaker, that quiet, tinny sound that belongs with mobiles of old simply does not exist. Voice calls are given the same amount of clarity, being loud and clear with an adjustable volume.
The music player itself is linked with Soundhound, an app that when used finds all the information associated with the song, as well as album covers and related works. It is also a music search engine, locating unfamiliar songs at the tap of an icon.
All apps on the HTC Desire C are easy to download through the HTC market place, but it comes pre-installed with Facebook, Soundhound, Google+ and YouTube. An intuitive 5 mega pixel camera allows you to shoot, edit and share your images straight to social sites Facebook and Twitter all within one application making it perfect for those wanting to keep in the know on the go. However, with no flash, taking snapshots in low light means that the images aren’t in as high quality as in the day.
The home screen can be easily customized, with the option to add several widgets that can be accessed at the slide of a finger. The HTC Desire C features the standard auto resize and pinch action which make zooming a more streamlined and easy process, but at times it can be choppy.
The HTC Desire C has been stripped back to everything a mobile phone should be: loud and clear phone calls and easy to use text messaging. Only with the added bonus of the amazing beats audio and superfast image shoot and share. As a “my first smartphone,” HTC have certainly ticked all the boxes.
