*Early morning at a summer music festival and it’s hotter than hell’s kettle. You’re so hot you feel like you’re being punished for the sins of a past life, when you beat up the sun’s little brother and called his relevant parent a hot mama. It’s so hot you pick up a discarded can of Fanta and hear wasps crying inside, saying stuff to each other in wasp language such as “I can’t go out in that”, “I wish I was a bee instead of a wasp, a bee who just stung something and was now dying and/or dead” and “we should never have left the Lucozade bottle.” So it’s hot, but guess what Einstein? You could be making the most of the soaring temperatures by owning a Crosskase Solar 15, a backpack which features an integrated 2,200mAh battery (powered by a 3W solar panel) which can charge portable devices using a USB cable or one of the included tips for Samsung, Apple, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Nokia and TomTom devices. And the amazing news is, you don’t even need UV rays from the spinning yellow orb above to juice-up the bag’s battery, artificial light drip-feeds it power too.

So now we know, bags can be cool as well as hot. This bag is cool and hot, but not cool in the temperature sense when the sun is out. That would contradict the laws of thermodynamics. But the bag is still cool in the “look at that guy’s bag, he must be cool and probably has abs” sense. And that is exactly what happens when you wear the Solar 15. In the past month, I’ve added 57 extra friends to my circle, people who just spotted me with the bag and thought “I’m getting me a slice of that friendship boyeee”.

Bags are cool, but did you know the first time a bag was ever mentioned in historical record, was back in 14th century Egypt? Hieroglyphics show a young prince with a jewelled and painted bag, the scene shows him angry about the feminine look of the pouch and he proclaims to a dozen of his laughing female servants “Nak Mimtep, nook roun tin lala!”. Carbon dating tells us this roughly translates as “That is not my bag baby.

So the Egyptians were first with the bag fashion awareness, but scientists in a lab recently found out a 14th-century Egyptian head would be hurted bad if it ever saw the Solar 15. It’s not hard to see why. This is a dazzling piece of gear. Although the battery itself can be charged via USB in four hours or using an optional mains adapter in three hours, the solar panel does the job in eight hours. It’s also made from water-repellent 1680D ballistic nylon, has a 25-litre capacity with pockets suitable for tablets, mobile phones, etc. and has a cheeky hide-away rain cover. It even has an airflow padding system at the back to help keep you cool while you strut.

But, like with all great things, there are two downsides to the bag: 1. It will never say “I love you”, no matter how much milk, cookies or trinkets you pour into its ungrateful orifices. And number 2. It costs £140. You don’t need me to tell you, that’s not cheap for a bag. However, if you’ve got the cash and don’t mind the bright-eyed jealous gaze of strangers then get a Solar 15.

Just imagine how handy it’ll be, if you ever get lost at Glasto and somehow find yourself stumbling over a field in the middle of the countryside. You thought you had no battery on your phone, then you remember “My Solar 15!”. So you whack the phone on charge and hey presto: back in business.

Then oh no, you don’t have a signal. Oops.
