How to get Record Companies to Notice you?

How to get Record Companies to notice your band is a reoccuring question by many aspiring artists out there struggling to make it. So, how do you get Record Labels to take notice?

Is it your draw at shows?
Do you Move To NYC and hope to get discovered playing in a NYC club?
Maybe it's how many records you sell on your own?
Do You hire a Lawyer?
What about contacting record labels yourself, send them a CD and then invite them to one of your shows?

What ever you do stay busy, build your grass roots following, spend every cent you have in the most practicle, Market specific way. TRY everything! within reason as there is no one surefire way to get noticed and land that deal. Timing is a big factor, who you know or make friends with and how dedicated you are in obtaining success as a professional musician.

Ask yourself questions on what you really want to achieve from the whole thing. You will know if you are ready for the big picture when you have your music together, sound professional, and you are willing to to sacrifice almost anything. Believeability in your sound and what you are saying in your music is an important element. Fans can tell if you are going through the motions or if you really mean it when portraying your musical message. Measure your readiness by observing the bands who have made it. Look at their presentation compared to yours. Does it measure up?

There are so many more items to discuss so I want to leave this open for as many questions you can conjure up.

Just to clear things up, you're not suggesting that bands move in order to make it, right?

don't do that! hahah

not suggesting that they move by any means its just a question that comes up as to whether or not you should and in some cases it might be better depending on your scene or lack there of.

true...its a tricky situation though... big cities mean more competition mean its harder to get noticed on the street level.

when it comes down to it, there is only one way to get noticed... and that's to be REALLY GOOD. hard work is important, yes....very important. but you gotta have the killer hooks that make the panties drop

I do agree although most bands think they are the best thing since sliced bread, so it is really up to the fans to make or break what is good and what is not in their vision, but then again there is a boundry line and an obviousness when comparing what is considered really good and really bad.

I think its much more beneficial to be a big fish in a little pond rather than vice versa..

you have to have a solid foundation created by yourself before you can expect anyone else to want to take you to the next level...

bands today are lucky as there are so many free or cheap ways to promote yourself online you just have to put in the time...

I totally agree. Being in a smaller market allows you to have a more focused fan base. In a place like NYC you can go to any club any night of the week and hear a decent band play. They are everywhere and they all play all the time. With so many bands and so many places to see them, getting a dedicated fan base is REALLY HARD. In a smaller market, shows aren't as frequent and there aren't as many talented and driven bands. Much easier to get 350 people out to see your show when there's nothing else going on. Also, in smaller markets you can get local support through radio and print and local record stores relatively easily.

I mean it's always going to be a lot of hard work, but there are way more advantages to being in a smaller to medium sized market than in a large one. You just have to be willing to travel to a bigger market to showcase...it can be a pain in the ass, but what an awesome experience. To go from touring the midwest to showcasing in NY or LA...it's a good time. And it seems to be easier for out of town bands to get feedback on showcases. When you live in their neighborhood, there isn't any real urgency to get back to you. You're too available.

yes good points... I think its also good to limit the amount of shows you do in your hometown to once maybe twice a month otherwise people start to think "oh we can see them anytime they are always playing" so its good to play other markets and build up fan bases in other towns and make your hometown show as much as a cant miss event as possible...living in Austin with quite possibly one of the most jaded and demanding audiences around you really have to put on a good show because there are SO many bands playing especially on the weekends...
