The Lovemakers- Scott Blonde- 12/15/2005 Synth infused rock – clothes + on stage makeout sessions = dropped jaws and moist panties all across the country.
San Francisco new wave act The Lovemakers have been slowly creeping into the mainstream with their incredibly danceable tunes and outrageously scandalous live performances. With former lovers Scott Blonde and Lisa Light fronting the group, their new album on Cherry Tree Records,
‘Times of Romance’ documents the ongoing love/hate relationship between the two singers, set to infectious rhythms and addictive melodies. Their single
Prepare for The Fight has been making its way to radio everywhere, and with any luck, they’ll be playing their guitars with vibrators in your hometown some time soon. I checked in with Scott Blonde to hear about their tour, plot some schemes, pick fights and find out what’s next for this promising new group…
ps- the song Prepare for The Fight is playing at the bottom of this interview...scroll down and right click to turn it off...but why would you want to, really?

So how is the tour going?
It’s good…I mean it’s hit or miss. We are playing these little shows on the way to other cities and they have no idea who we are. I mean we don’t get any radio play or anything, so playing in Ames, IA isn’t as much fun as say Portland or New York. For the most part though, it’s been awesome in the major cities.
Your show is a little on the risqué side, so it’s probably good that these little towns don’t know who you are.
Hahaha, yeah.
I know you guys have played in OKC, and that’s where I am. If more people knew who you were, I am sure they would have boycotted and picketed or like run you out of town. We don’t take kindly to new wave bands stripping down on stage and making out with each other!
The press would have been great though!!
Hahaha, well if you’re into the idea I will make you an Anti-Fan site… act like its from the Christian coalition or something and just talk about how evil you are… that should get you on the local news!!
Hey, that’s a great idea! Every time we play somewhere, we’ll call a bunch of churches ahead of time and let them know some heathens are coming!
Dude, it would totally work…let’s get on it.
A band we play with, She Wants Revenge had to deal with something like that. They have this song “I Wanna Tear You Apart” and some women’s organization complained to the label and everyone about the song. We’ve never dealt with anything like that, but I think it would be awesome.
It’ll happen… you guys are growing…although slowly…
Yeah, we like it that way. Our A&R guy wants us to blow up huge, but our manager thinks we should take our time and build up a solid fan base. I think it’s a good idea.
Oh totally…that’s the way to do it. Especially when you’re in a genre that would be easy to niche or pigeonhole… but are you noticing any difference with the crowds as you do get bigger?
We always see a big change in a city once we start getting airplay there. I mean we go from no one knowing who we are to a fairly good crowd that is into it. We’re from the Bay Area, and that’s like an incubator for what COULD happen. When we play in the Bay Area it’s pretty rockstar. We play all ages shows and we will really have all ages there. Teenagers that wanna dance, and like 40 year olds that think we sound like Berlin. Hahaha, we don’t want to be like a ‘hipster’ band or anything…we definitely aren’t hipsters. We just want people to have a good time like we are. So, if home shows are any indication, we will be seeing some changes as we get more radio play.
Have you been working on any new material or are you just focused on touring right now?
We started to demo songs as soon as we finished Times of Romance. Probably because we were so sick of playing the songs on the record that we wanted to do something different. When we are on the road, there really isn’t time to sit down and work on songs, so right now we are focused on the shows. We have some off time coming up though and I am sure we will demo some more stuff then. But yeah, we have about 20 songs or ideas already down.
Does that mean we can expect another record soon?
I have no idea. It really all depends on how this one does, you know? I mean when we release the second single, if it blows up then we will be back on the road touring again. So, it depends on a lot of things, and it definitely won’t be for at least a year. I mean the record just came out like 4 months ago… so we’re still riding this one.
I really love this one, so you can release each and every song as a single if you want. Hahaha Oh, I was poking around the internet, right? And I came across all these mash ups and remixes of your songs…
Hahaha…yeah… there are quite a few of them.
How do you feel about that?
I think it’s awesome! I mean if people are so into the songs that they wanna fool around with them then have at it! It’s great!
Have you thought about releasing instrumental and vocal tracks and having one of those ‘remix’ contests?
Well we did something like that for our last record, actually. It’s different now though...if you wanna do anything at all once you’re on a label you have to run it past like 15 different people.
Ha… well…if Thrice can do it, you can do it! I think you should…I’d remix the shit out of your songs.
That’s awesome! Maybe we will…who knows?
So are you pleased with how things are going so far?
Yeah! At this point things are pretty awesome. We have a new single coming out in the new year, we’re gonna do a video and stuff. I really hope radio gets behind it. We are saving certain songs for the right moment, you know? A lot of people talk about how horrible radio is, but the only way to make things happen is with radio support. We hope to graduate to bigger venues, sell out some 500 capacity places.
You should ask Santa. Dear Santa, I have been a good boy. This year for Xmas, I’d like radio support and to sell out 500 seat venues.
Hahaha! Yeah!!! I am gonna ask him. Hopefully he’ll come through for us.
That’s awesome. So tell me something about you, Scott. A dirty little secret.
Hmmmm…
Maybe not a secret, but something you make a point to leave out of most conversations.
Wow…good question!
Really? I thought it was kinda bullshit. Here’s an example though… I like Barry Manilow.
Ah..I see what you’re sayin.
Yeah…and that one is true, too.
Haha..awesome! Well, I guess maybe that I don’t listen to 80’s music or like any of the new wave stuff. The kind of music we play isn’t what I am into really. I mean, I guess we’re new wave. When we first started it was ‘electroclash’, then it was ‘80’s’ and like ‘neo-new wave.’ Whatever the next thing is they wanna call it, we will probably be that, too.
So what do you rock out to?
Honestly, I really like the Grateful Dead.
Ewwwwww… Like jam band shit??
No no..nothing like that. I like Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin…stuff like that.
Oh…well that’s not so bad.
I also like death metal.
Interesting combination.
Hahaha…well, I am from Vermont. And I guess Pink Floyd was kind of the vibe there.
Who do you think is totally overrated?
Oh man! You have some time?? Hahaha…where to begin?
I guess a current band? I dunno… a historical one..whatever. Just name someone.
The Bravery.
Everyone hates them! That’s an easy one.
Yeah it seems most bands in our genre think The Bravery are a bunch of assholes.
It probably has something to do with how fake they are.
Yeah..the makeup?? What is that???
Or the old pictures of that guy with dreads when he was in some shitty funk rock band or whatever.
Hahaha…you will never dig up one of those on me…it doesn’t exist.
Do you wanna start a feud with them?
Everyone else is.
Hahahaha…good answer! Well..who do you wanna fight? Like who would you challenge to a music-off?
Ummm… I think Belle and Sebastian. I hate that stuff..it makes me really angry. And Cat Power. All that ‘woe is me’ crap. It’s like they beg for all this attention so they can sing songs about how they want to be left alone. It’s so stupid. I went to a Belle and Sebastian show and it was so quiet in there you could carry on a full blown conversation with the person next to you…in a pretty big venue meant to be loud. I just don’t get it.
If I thought either band had the balls to fight you, I would do everything I could to arrange that.
Haha..that’s great.
Well dude..I am gonna let you go. Next time you come through, we are totally gonna party.
Yeah we are! I can’t wait!!
For sure... thanks for talking to me Scott... good luck with everything!
Thanks AJ!
