The Land Of Locksley

By: FRIDAE MATTAS

As they make fun of Hinder on Much Music I submit this interview with The band of Locksley’s, who were only in Toronto for one night and it was to perform at the Silver Dollar in a Canadian Music Week showcase. Although they are not Canadian, they managed to land a spot to perform during CMW. What I noticed as this interview progressed was these lads are very sarcastic. One major blonde moment and they dragged it on forever during the interview. Sarcasm is caught onto when the person your talking to is sarcastic themselves. I noticed all of their slight connotation regarding the “Blonde Moment”. We sat in a booth at the venue during a bands sound check where it got loud, always interruptions now I find little quiet areas for interviews I don’t care if it’s in the bathroom at least it will be quiet with natural echo’s perfect for recording. From what I can remember Jesse was to my left across the table, Aaron directly in front, Kai beside Aaron to my right and Sam on a chair far right. Kai was repeatedly throwing in these big dictionary words into his answers acting as if he had such a sundry vocabulary. Sometimes you could not believe half of what they were saying because they were always joking around. I did take them seriously sometimes extracting their fabrications from truth. These Fellas would be amusing characters to chill with off the record, it’s like they live in their own world, forget the Beetles the new Monkey’s with an American edge these dudes need a show! A little note to Americans who did not know that when in Canada, your US Dollar is worth more than the Canadian Dollar.

FRIDAE: Here we are with “Locksley”! A little introduction, who is who and who does what?

LOCKSLEY: “I am Aaron, I play bass.” “I am Kai I play guitar and sing.” “I’m Jesse, I sing and play guitar.” “I am Sam, I play drums and maracas.” *mild chuckles*

FRIDAE: Good stuff man, you guys recently did Jimmy Kimmel, how was that?

LOCKSLEY: "Fantastic! It was not only a great learning experience, it was a great experience from top to bottom. And we got to hang out with Sarah Silverman, She Called us Pussy’s”.

*Laughs*

FRIDAE: Did you guys like L.A. have you been there before?

LOCKSLEY: "We’ve been there before, L.A. Doesn’t like us, it rains every time except this time it was chilly, a little cold."

FRIDAE: I was recently listening to a few of your tracks I like the sound the vocals blend very well with the music, the sound is not over done as some bands tend to do. The harmonies and back up vocals are also great.

LOCKSLEY: “Thank You”

FRIDAE: How did you all learn your craft?

LOCKSLEY : "Years of practice, Oh yeah definitely, you somewhat stumble upon the things you like when your young and you’re taking your time learning how to do it. When you stumble into it you can’t get enough of it and with repetition you keep going until you don’t suck."

AARON: "We all have musical backgrounds playing various instruments and as far as singing Jesse has been singing all his life. Kai and I sing in the band kind of improving in that aspect, always perfecting our sound."

FRIDAE: Practice makes perfect.

AARON: Exactly!

FRIDAE: Why did you choose to go into the musical direction you did, it is Beetles sounding.

JESSE: "When we sit down to write a song we get music out of it that you don’t hear every day, we write music that we like to play."

RANDOM DRUNK DUDE COMES UP AND INTERRUPTS TELLING US MID INTERVIEW THAT THEY RAN OUT OF BEER. Continues on slurridly for three minutes.

FRIDAE: Where are you guys from and how was the band formed? Did you guys take your name from Robin Hood?

A LOCKSLEY: Yeah, we did actually.

KAI: "This band was formed in I would say New York I was in High school and there was a band that I Kai was in for a very short time."

JESSE: "We all met in High School the band really took shape out in New York at one point a couple of years separated and went to college. Sam went to a Technical School I went to an Engineering School, Aaron went to UW for two years and Kai went out to San Francisco after New York. After two years we met back up."

A LOCKSLEY: "No farms baby, NO Farms!"

*Laughs*

FRIDAE: What is your purpose, why are you playing music, what are your intentions.

LOCKSLEY: “What are your intentions with my daughter *Laughs* I’m in love with her I’m going to marry her!”

LOCKSLEY: "I suppose I think at this point our skills in life have diminished *Laughs* to the point where we can only play music so we have kind of left the rest of our proclivity atrophy I’d say. Nah not really, depending on what you do for fun or whatever, back in high school after class this is what we would do for fun and when we would get off work we would get together and play but these days when we get off work it’s not as much fun. Just like a basketball player or a football player they loved doing it and at some point it turned into a job. We are just taking it one step at a time trying to see if we are as good as we think we are. We could be the biggest band in the world or we could not, it would still be fine. "

LOCKSLEY: "True story actually a while back we gave it a week to get regular jobs and a week later we met back in our apartment and we all were wearing barrels and suspenders. That’s a true story, that’s a true true story, but we decided to not ever try to get real jobs again but the truth is I did very well the three of them showed up in barrels but I showed up in a Roll Royce I did very well for myself."

FRIDAE: Do you have any opinions, on bands such as “Hinder” one of those who are in it only to play tap the groupie and smell their cheddar which they need to save.

LOCKSLEY: "We don’t really know much about Hinder but I’m sure they paid their dues or what not. This goes for any band, if they’re mean we don’t like them."

FRIDAE: Ok what do you bring to your stage performance that other bands do not.

LOCKSLEY: "We definitely bring a unique energy, compared to what you hear on our album, elevated vivacity is our live performance. There may not be many people out there we still rock out. Everyone’s invited to the party we don’t exclude."

FRIDAE: Are you aiming towards a major recording contract or are you happy with the Indie scene?

LOCKSLEY: "No real scene suits us, we are loners, we are kind of like the shadowy figure with the long trench coat lingering in the corner."

*WESTERN WHISTLE FROM ONE OF THE LOCKSLEY's really close to the mic.*

FRIDAE: Are you happy with the music you are playing or would you like to play something harder?

LOCKSLEY: "Well you kind of knocked our other project there Hinder”.

FRIDAE: Hinder is not hard we are talking like System hard.

LOCKSLEY: "We don’t have all the anger or machinery to do that, the feel that’s there is what we play. We want people to come to our live show to dance and have fun."

FRIDAE: Now let’s say you were to do anything other than music what would you do.

LOCKSLEY: "I would be starting midfielder for Manchester United, Jesse would be the first lady *Laughs* First Man on Mars, Acting or Writing something artistic, ora Curator at Museum."

FRIDAE: Who writes majority of the tracks, how does that work with you guys?

Jesse: "GOD, it comes from GOD down through us. "

KAI: "For the last album it was primarily Jesse and myself Aaron wrote one of them. But Primarily Jesse and myself."

FRIDAE: Thanks Guys that's it

LOCKSLEY: "That was easy".
