The back of the Opera House in Toronto is where this interview took place, the inside of the venue, was overtaken by sound check for the Siren Sounds Benefit Concert, taking place a few hours later. These Canadian boys were the only males set to perform in an all female lineup. I have never seen this band perform live so I was a bit skeptical when I met them and we started chatting as to what their talent levels were at. I had to cut them off a few times when jibbering to stay on track. Otherwise, this interview would have ended up in forty different directions as the good ones usually do. The question lingering in this very complex mind at the end of this conversation was; were these dudes going to bring it?! Were they going to put on a performance as colorful and magnetic as their personalities? Only time would tell (actually, I just had to wait a few hours until their set.) if this five piece rock band would pull it off and impress me or just flounder down under with the other garbage I have seen and heard. Introducing GOODBYE GLORY!!
FRIDAE: “How did you get involved with the Siren Sounds Charity event?”
DANTE: “Chantelle Sheppard who works for ‘Milkcrate Event Management’, I talked to her last year she contacted me, she heard about our band and wanted us to play a show. Then it turned out it was going to be an all female line up. Six months later, she came back and said we can get you in the show so if you guys would like to play. Then we found out it was a Charity event and then we found out what charity it was so were like for sure no problem we are in, we love doing charity events.”
ADAM: “We moved everything aside to play.”
FRIDAE: “What Makes Goodbye Glory different from let’s say Simple Plan?”
ADAM: “We Rock! We Rock! We f****** Rock!”
KEVIN: “What makes us different is definitely our music and definitely our image.”
DANTE: “What we are about!”
KEVIN: “What we are about yeah, everything that we are about, it just goes to show you we are doing a charity show, we do a bunch of charity shows and I’m not putting down Simple Plan or anything like that I have no clue what they do or what they are all about. But we are all caring guys, sensitive and we are good listeners. We do hugs, we love hugging.”
ADAM: “We love a lot and we love everyone.”
KEVIN: “We love a lot we love people animals and everything.”
ADAM: “Love and kisses those are the main ingredients.”
FRIDAE: “Who, would you love to work with on your next album?”
(The boy’s get excited with this one)
ADAM: “Ozzy Osbourne!! Ozzy Osbourne would be amazing to work with!”
KEVIN: “You know what, just because it would be different, if I could pick anybody it would be Timbaland.”
DANTE: “Yeah! I was gonna say because I read a thing about ‘Fall Out Boy’ and they did their first album with whoever and then they went with Babyface for their new album as a producer who is primarily an R&B and Rap producer. They just went with something new to get a new sound. So, that would be cool. We worked with Jag Tanna and Gavin Brown on our first record so that was just incredible because those are two big Canadian Rock Icons. To do something completely different, out of range or to bring in a different sound, either a Jazz sound or a Jazz sounding producer or an R&B, Rap type of producer would be really cool! We want to work with everyone in the world eventually so that is our goal, to work with everyone in the world.”
KEVIN: “Including you Fridae!”
FRIDAE: “Well, you are working with me now!”
DANTE “Yeah including you Fridae you can check that off the list.”
ADAM: “Even unborn children.”
*Laughs*
KEVIN: *Laughs* “Yeah in the womb.”
FRIDAE: “Who is who, and who does what?”
KEVIN: “We are not a three piece by the way.”
FRIDAE: “I know there are more of you.”
KEVIN: “Yeah, our Drummer, and Bassist are not here. Our Drummer is Renzo Casullo and our Bassist is Jan-Michael Rossi, I’m Kevin Costa I’m the singer.”
ADAM: “You already said that!”
DANTE: “I’m Dante I play and do the Guitar, Vocals, and Piano.”
ADAM: “Did I mention hugs? Cuz that’s what I do in the band I give lots of hugs.”
FRIDAE: “You go around and give hugs.”
ADAM: “On stage, I just call people up and I start giving them hugs. Yeah that’s it, No, I’m Adam Staviss, and I play Guitar as well.”
FRIDAE: “You just mentioned you worked with Gavin Brown, how was that working with such great Canadian talent?”
ADAM: “Great! Fantastic; really couldn’t ask for more the guy showed us a lot of different perspectives on songwriting, arraignments and just gave us a different frame of mind.”
DANTE: “I remember more than anything sitting down and writing with him, he didn’t write any of our songs but he helped us with tightening the loose ends. Just sitting down with him and actually picking his brain. There were tons of times where we sat and chatted with him, to talk to someone like that who has worked with everyone and
has millions of records sold, has received Juno’s and has done all this stuff, a world traveler type of guy. It’s really good for a young band like us it was definitely a blessing.”
KEVIN: “He’s definitely a personable guy except he just doesn’t return phone calls!”
*Laughs*
ADAM: “Yeah Gavin, he pretty much hates us!”
FRIDAE: “Is there a new album in the works?”
DANTE: “Yes”
ADAM: “There will be”
KEVIN: “Yes”
DANTE: “Yes, we are actually in the writing process right now writing new stuff, there are about five or six songs done and another four or so in the works. It takes time we just don’t want to rush it.”
KEVIN: “I wanna Give Fridae a gift!”
DANTE: “OK”
(Kevin plucks a flower weed that is growing from under the stairs.)
FRIDAE: * Sarcastic * “Oh my God thank you so much!”
KEVIN: “There you go Fridae.”
DANTE: “It’s the bluest rose I have ever seen in my life, he just found a blue rose.”
KEVIN: “It’s all I could manage but I picked out the prettiest one!”
FRIDAE: *Laughingly sarcastic* “Thank you so much I am very grateful!”
ADAM: “As you should be!”
FRIDAE: “You guys should be grateful that I am here!”
ADAM: “I am very grateful!”
KEVIN: “You know what! That attitude just turned me on!”
DANTE: “Yeah.”
FRIDAE: Are you planning a tour?
DANTE: “You know what, right now…Sorry someone else talk I keep talking.”
ADAM: “Ok I’m going to talk about this tour! Always planning a tour, the ultimate goal is to travel anywhere we can all across the world. I think what we are going to initially do is cross Canada the US definitely we just recently played a show in Pennsylvania that was incredible one of the best show we ever played. KEVIN: “Arrhhh, that’s going too far!”
DANTE: “Alright, that’s going too far man”
FRIDAE: “Going too far.”
DANTE: “We’ll just leave it at those.”
ADAM: “Ok we’ll leave it at those, that’s ok.”
