With a new album heading your way and a mass of dates all booked up we spoke to Gwen Stacy about music and life on the road.
ALT - So, why did you chose Gwen Stacy as a name?
Comics are a common interest of ours, and we liked the sound of it.
ALT - As a Christian band, do you feel it's sometimes harder to get through to people who make negative assumptions based on your faith, or isn't that really a factor anymore?
People are used to Christian bands now. It's not like it's a big deal or new thing anymore. People seem to be receptive to our way of going about our faith. We respect people and they seem to respect us for that.
ALT - What's the best part about being involved with this band?
Doing something that makes a positive influence. My favorite part of being in this band is writing and playing songs that make a positive impact on people, whether it be a mass of people or just a few. I can't think of anything better to do with my life than to impact the world in a good way.
ALT - Was there a major difference in releasing an album with a label compared to self-releasing?
There's a huge difference. Ferret basically took what we do and multiplied it. Kids were listening to our stuff and coming to shows before we signed, but not like they are now.
ALT - You're touring with Poison The Well this summer, what are you most looking forward to about that tour?
Being on tour with a band that directly influences mine. PTW are on my list of bands I list as our influences, and I'm a genuine fan.
ALT - What are your plans after the tour?
We have some festivals, including Cornerstone, and then I'm not sure yet actually. We have a little time at home, which we'll be working on material we've been writing since January for the next album.
ALT - How has the new album been doing?
It's doing really well. It's still selling well each week, kids have been singing the words at shows, and we're having trouble keeping them in stock on tour.
ALT - Has it lived up to expectation?
It's actually done a lot better than we expected. We don't exactly have a platinum record on our wall, but we're more than happy with how it's doing.
ALT - What's the toughest part for a band trying to breakthrough nowadays? From the perspective of being in a band?
I'd say getting used to the road. Any smart new band needs to be out and busy non stop coming out of the gate, and going from semi normal life to full time touring can be a huge shock. We've done some heavy touring on our own, but it's the end of April and I've been in my house for a grand total of about three weeks this year.
ALT - Do you think people take notice more of what you're saying with your music or how "cool" the music is at the time?
I think you get kids' attention with the general sound, and if you say something worth listening to, kids will listen.
ALT - Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Come out to a show and say hi, pick up the record, and thanks for taking the time to read this.
