Oooh, who watched the documentary that was on Tuesday (I think) about Kurt Cobain?

It was called "Kurt Cobain About a Son", and was pretty much done by Michael Azerrad ("Our band could be your life", book) who conducted all the interviews with Kurt.

I sky plussed it and just got round to watching it now, I thought it was great. To begin with I thought Kurt was a bit of a cock with some of the things he said, he sounded really ignorant and immature, such as when he talked about his dislike for "normal" people, and how if he see's them he feels the need to say something to them or fight them or just ignore them or whatever - I thought that was very judgemental and a bit dumb. However, he won me over when he talked about revenge, I could blates identify with his view that revenge must be sought no matter what! No matter how long ago it was! Damn straight!

Did anyone else watch it? What did you think?

And who was the wierd band from Olympia they kept showing who I strangely loved?

I have Sky+ it (I was going work on here - how committed am I?) but haven't watch it yet. I don't know if I can say I am looking forward to it, as I imagine it will make me quite sad.

Kurt is my biggest hero, and I genuinely miss him. I think the world is much poorer place without him.

I knew you would have watched it (or sky+ etc), I also figured you would be able tell me who the band I was asking about was as well.

It is sad, but not as much as you think it'd be. I used to really really idolise Kurt before watching this doc, and for me it made him sound just like a normal person saying stupid things, which I think is good as what I thought about him before clearly wasn't real, just an idea of what I'd thought he'd be like through small segments of what he said and did.

The documentary doesn't make him look bad, but more like a regular person who isn't so head up in the clouds. It made him sound like he has a good perspective, not someone who is just messed up and depressed. I think a lot of people will understand him more after this.

It's long though, and I'm gonna watch it again as I was really tired and it took me two sittings as I was practically falling asleep in the first one. But yeah, I'm gonna watch it again and make sure I hear everything it offers properly.

I didn't read your whole post to be honest, as I was worried there would be spoilers ; )

I will let you know who that bands is if I know.

The thing is, having read a few books on him, and from interviews I have seen etc, he was a normal guy in many ways - most rock stars are deep down. He just happened to be very talented, and sadly wasn't very happy with the world, and his place in it.

His comments about 'normal' people, well I haven't heard them yet, but I can relate to that way more than the revenge one. I think his idea of 'normal' people may not be the same as yours, and is probably the wrong word to use. I suspect he was talking about the jock types, and corporate types etc. He just didn't relate to those people, and although I can co-exist with them, neither can I. It's like people who watch X Factor because they really love the music, read 'lads mags' and go to Magaluf for their holidays - I just don't relate to these people, and find that they frustrate me. Fortunately I believe in 'live and let live', so meh.

I dunno, I just find I relate to a lot of what he says, if not his upbringing and life in general.

Well it makes sense if you think about it. Nirvana de-throned cock rock. As they were coming up and entering the mainstream, the country was still full of assholes with feathery mullets and crazy tight acid washed jeans. THAT was normal. Then, of course, there were also the coked out businessmen with their shiny suits and gigantic cell phones. It was a really weird, transitional time.

He was only 27 when he killed himself and the band hadn't been around for that long. Society was changing...'normal' was being redefined. He was too young to be patient. Too immature to rise above it. He had no perspective.

The first thing creative people create is their own sense of reality. His was dark and he was always a victim. It's unfortunate, I guess, but the music had to come from somewhere. Don't be sad that he's gone. He wasn't meant to stay. Can you imagine an aging Cobain struggling to maintain relevance today? That would be much sadder.

Personally I don't think he would still be in music now (he said that he was getting bored and Michael Stype was the only person who he had any interest in working with in the future), but I just wish he was alive anyway, for his daughter's sake if nothing else.

Ahh, well in that case I guess I fully agree to what he called "normal people", I thought he meant those harmless suits on the train reading newspapers. People I find pretty non offensive.

Heron - stop reading now contains spoilers!

I agree with GlockMeAmadeus about him being a victim as well - but he kinda acknowledges that and even says he doesn't really have a reason to moan compared to other people, he was just a little discontented and didn't get over his 'rents getting divorced, which really isn't that a big a deal.

It was interesting to hear him talk so much as well. I've only ever heard him speak in a croakey strung out way before, on this doc he almost sounds peppy on a large majority of it! And he sounds really young, younger than 25/26 (which is how old he woulda been during the interviews). It took me a second or two to realise it was actually him talking! Definitely changed a few of my pre conceptions about him.

Another cheap and badly put together film cashing in on kurts legacy, which will be coming to a bargain bin near you very soon.

The film makers didn't even get the rights to use one Nirvana song in the entire length of the film, People should stick to the books, like heavier than heaven, or live through this, where there is far more insight to be found on what he was like as a person.

I saw one movie a few years back that was appalling, don't remember it's name but man it was boring. Shame cause surely someone could do the man justice in film?

Was it the Gus Van Sant one, 'Last Days'?
