Hamlet 2, the smash hit of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, opens this Friday, August 22nd in select cities throughout the US, with a nationwide release scheduled for Wednesday, August 27th. In the irreverent comedy, a failed actor-turned-worse-high school drama teacher (Steve Coogan of Tropic Thunder) rallies his Tucson, AZ students as he conceives and stages a politically incorrect musical sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The Focus Features release also stars Catherine Keener, David Arquette, Amy Poehler, Melonie Diaz, Skylar Astin and Phoebe Strole (both of Broadway’s Spring Awakening), and Elisabeth Shue. Elle calls it “Rent played for laughs.” Entertainment Weekly calls it “dementedly hilarious.” And we call it soundtrack gold. Naturally, the film features original musical numbers – with choice titles like “Raped in the Face” and “You’re As Gay as the Day is Long” – written for the titular musical-within-the-movie. These songs and more have been corralled onto the just-released Hamlet 2 soundtrack, with two exclusive tracks available only at iTunes. The crown jewel of the set, “Rock Me Sexy Jesus,” is available for streaming below, along with a follow-the-marquee sing-along music video featuring clips from the film.
