New Jersey indie-twang quartet Carlon will release its debut full-length on September 30th, via Ropeadope Digital. The long-anticipated following-up to the band’s self-released Suburban Heel EP, Johari Window is a digital-only collection of twelve folksy rock songs and meticulously-harmonized ballads, taking cues from 60s rock, Americana, and twangy modern-day indie acts like Band of Horses. The band’s primary song-writers, dueling guitarist/vocalists Michael McWilliams and Ryan McGlynn, have been collaborating since the late 90s, when the two met on the Jersey shore. But Carlon didn’t truly take shape until bassist Jared Pollack and drummer Milo Venter were added to the mix in 2002. The result was a full-bodied sound that won the band a slew of shows in the NYC area, and the attention of Ropeadope Records.
Produced by the band and Ross Petersen (Bruce Spingsteen, Muse), the record was recorded in the same 20,000 square foot warehouse Carlon calls its rehearsal space. As a result, the album brims with a warm, familiar sound, even though many of these songs are new to the world. In advance of Johari Window’s release, Carlon has offered up one of those tracks, “Cantaloupe,” for free download. No stranger to reverb, the song borrows the grain silo massiveness of early My Morning Jacket records, while calling to mind the careful harmonies of Fleet Foxes.
